THE HUNGER GAMES: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SCORE By James Newton Howard

I enjoyed the movie version of The Hunger Games. Part of that enjoyment came from James Newton Howard’s soundtrack. Although the musical snippets accentuate the action on the screen, they stand alone as compelling pieces. I’ve long enjoyed James Newton Howard’s work. His best soundtracks are The Sixth Sense and Blood Diamonds, but Howard has composed dozens of great soundtracks over three decades. My only complaint with The Hunger Games soundtrack is its length: it’s only 45 minutes long. I wanted more. GRADE: B+

Once again, I did not notice the music while watching the film. I was too caught up in the plot, I guess. I did notice the music in THE DEEP BLUE SEA however. Probably because it used music I was familiar with already. That is usually when I notice music.

I hadn’t heard this soundtrack yet, so I appreciate your “heads-up” on it. That clip sounds good, so I’ll be going to preview the whole thing. You’re right, that’s short for a soundtrack these days. I wonder if they are planning a second one for the second film, a third for that film, and then a large “set” with all three in longer versions, similar to what was done with the LOTR films. Still, if it sounds good enough, I’ll probably get it.

Oh, I see there will be a change of director for the next one. Just read this:
“The Hunger Games director, Gary Ross, has pulled out of directing the film franchise’s sequel, according to reports.

The film-maker was praised for his directorial skills on the critically acclaimed and commercially successful first film, which became the third-highest opening box office debut in history.

But, according to The Playlist, Ross would prefer to focus on his new, self-penned film project than return to direct the second film in the series, Catching Fire. The film, which is due out in November 2013, is rumoured to have a draft screenplay written by Slumdog Millionaire script writer Simon Beaufoy. “

Arcade Fire also contributed to the movie’s original score. The group composed the grand, fascistic-inspired, ominous Panem national anthem, entitled “Horn of Plenty”, an important and signature leitmotif appearing throughout the film.
