It’s hard to believe The Mentalist has been around for five seasons. I attribute the show’s longevity to Simon Baker. Baker plays Patrick Jane, an former “psychic” who abandons his con man ways to focus on his obsessive quest to find “Red John,” the serial killer who killed Jane’s wife and daughter. To have access to investigative resources, Jane works as a consultant to the California Bureau of Investigation. Tonight is the season finale and follows the pattern of the other four season finales as the Jane closes in on the identity of Red John. According to the promo ads, Jane has reduced the number of Red John suspects to seven. Don’t be surprised if this episode ends in a cliff-hanger.
A show I do like. The first season I had to catch up on though as I thought it a copy of Psych.
Randy, THE MENTALIST alternates funny episodes with very dark episodes. Diane and I prefer the funny ones.
Not my taste. Ditto about Psych.
Jeff, THE MENTALIST is fluff, but it’s high order fluff.
Not sure why we have never watched this one. A good rental for us.
Patti, you’ll find Simon Baker clever and engaging. And he’s surrounded by a good cast.
I really liked the first three seasons but as more and more emphasis was put on Red John I began to lose interest and I have only been watching it sporadically the last year. The same with Castle – once they got together I sort of lost interest, just like I did with Bones for the same reason. I guess I just need something new after awhile. Besides, I like to buzz through episodes on Netflix without commercials, sometimes watching whole seasons in a day or two, like I did with their original series Hemlock Grove (so so) and the MTV series Awkward (which I highly recommend).
Stan, I know what you mean about those Red John episodes. Creepy. But the funny episodes out-number the Red John ones so we’re still watching. Simon Baker is a very engaging actor.
