The Buffalo Bills chose corner back Stephon Gilmore (South Carolina) in the First Round. I love the pick! The Bills couldn’t stop anybody last year. Their defense ranked near the bottom of the League. With their Second Round pick, the Bills picked massive offensive lineman, Cordy Glenn (Georgia). Another great choice! Many draft gurus had Cordy Glenn going in the First Round on their mock drafts. In the Third Round, the Bills picked the best wide receiver left on the board: T. J. Graham (NC State). With these three picks, the Bills have address three big needs on their team. Today, the Bills have two picks in the Fourth Round, one Fifth Round pick, two Sixth Round picks, and two Seventh Round picks. Ten picks in all. Bills fans are hoping the 2012 Draft will provide the depth that was so lacking last season. How did your team do?
Draft Day, and hopes springs eternal among the also rans.
Hope is running wild in Bills Nation, Jeff. The first three picks have been met with universal acclaim here.
So apparently you’re happy with the Bill’s selections. I’m not as convinced, but if Glenn stays healthy he will be a good pick in a couple of years. I think he’ll need a little more speed and technique to go with his size. He may have to learn it the hard way: by getting beat for half a season. That will depend on the offensive line coach. I do like Gilmore, and know nothing about Graham.
The Seahawks made what I consider to be the only reach in the first round with outside linebacker Bruce Irvin from West Virginia, who’s had plenty of off-field problems since his early college days. In the high-pressure, big money atmosphere of the NFL, I hope he can resist temptation to make bad personal decisions. If so, he’s got the football skills to be a success, but that’s a big ‘if”. Their third round pick, Russell Wilson from Wisconsin, is a talented but short {5’10”) QB. In the current league, size matters with quarterbacks, but his skills may overcome that. I don’t much care for the QBs the Seahawks have already, so I have some hope. They still need better offensive line, but maybe they can find a gem in the late rounds.
This draft is thin on linebackers, Rick. I’ve seen several teams “reach” for them, notably New England in the First Round. So far, the Bills have chosen “quality” characters. When Stephon Gilmore came to visit Buffalo yesterday, he brought his parents. Nice touch.
I’d love to see the Bills improve vs. the Patriots and Jets but we’ll see how it goes. The Giants have a killer schedule (see my comment on Rick’s blog) so I’ll continue to bask in the post-Super Bowl glow for the time being.
Jeff, the Bills have a schedule that is tough at the beginning (four away games in the first six games), but after two West Coast games (SF and Arizona) things get more hopeful. The Bills are home for four of the last five games.
I like the Glenn pick, George. When in doubt, draft a big slab of SEC beef.
Exactly, Drongo. The Bills needed to bulk up…and they did!
Well, my ‘Skins got the QB they’ve needed for years, RG III, hopefully. The Jets were dead before the draft, I think they’re sinking back into obscurity, so the draft doesn’t really matter. And the Panthers picked up a couple of pieces on defense and a young running back. With Newton last year, they look to have begun a rise.
The Skins gave up a ton of draft picks for RGIII, Randy. If they miss on him, they’ll be crippled for years. The Panthers will be a dangerous team this season.
Hey, it’s hard not to want to smack Rex Ryan with his blowhard guarantees and his team’s inability to back up his words. But the Jets went one better this time, obviously deciding that signing Mark Sanchez to a long-term deal needed to be backed up by a quarterback controversy. How else explain getting Tebow?
Everyone is scratching their heads about the Jets signing Tebow, Jeff. A QB controversy would be the last thing the Jets need.
I think the Redskins will end up with one too.
You’re right, Rick. As soon as RGIII goes three-and-out, the fans will be screaming for the backup QB!
