On June 13, 2024, I posted about The Soul Story, Volume 2. Steve Oerkfitz liked the compilation and commented, “Probably the best one you have reviewed that I can recall.”
So to honor Steve after his untimely death, I offer this initial 2-CD set of the TIME-LIFE series. I would like to think Steve would have loved this compilation as much as he loved The Soul Story, Volume 2. GRADE: A

I didn’t know Steve died! Did you announce it?
As for the CD, it’s fine! A lot of good tunes and a few great ones!
Bob, here’s the announcement: https://pattinase.blogspot.com/2024/07/rip-steve-oerkfitz.html
Wait—when did Steve die? Oh no, another good person gone.
Deb, it was a week or so ago. Check Patti’s blog.
Jeff, it’s sad that Steve is gone…
Deb, here’s the announcement: https://pattinase.blogspot.com/2024/07/rip-steve-oerkfitz.html
Good stuff from my elementary school years (SPANISH HARLEM) through college (TIRED OF BEING ALONE). Will BACK STABBERS be the theme song for this year’s Democratic Party convention? Sad news about Steve Oerkfitz. True Deb–we can’t afford to lose the good ones.
Fred, Steve will be missed.
Good list. Every time I hear The Blues Brothers doing “Soul Man,” it makes me cringe. To say Belushi was no Sam Moore is a gross understatement.
Jeff, Steve loved soul music–and The Pretenders–so this set would have delighted him.
Sorry to hear of Steve’s passing.
He’ll be missed.
Beth, I’ll miss Steve’s strong opinions about music and books.
Certainly, if anything, more hits in this one. Doris Troy’s career was limned, as has been noted by historians, by her only hit, “Just One Look”, though she did sign at one later point to Apple Records.
I didn’t converse with Steve as much as I might’ve liked…I think he joined Jackie Kashian’s Facebook group because of my mentioning her and it.
Todd, Steve had some health problems.
Indeed. Nearly lifelong ones. I’ve been circulating the death notices/obits to two Fb groups, the Jackie Kashian and the ex-Borders staff groups.
Todd, obits in newspapers are a Thing of the Past. Most people just post to FACEBOOK or INSTAGRAM. A friend of mine wrote an obituary for his mother who died recently and the local newspaper charged him $500 to run it. And…it was only a short paragraph!
Sometimes. of late, the funeral parlors offer to place the ads in at least one paper, along with online notes.
Buying in bulk.
Todd, the BUFFALO NEWS features five or six pages of obits on Sundays. With color photos!
https://www.sullivanfuneraldirectors.com/obituaries/Steven-Oerkfitz/ Dunno which papers might’ve had the notices.
Todd, we will all miss Steve.
