The Vinyl Detective and Nevada (along with friends Tinkler and Agatha) travel to Sweden on an assignment to acquire a rare demonic metal record. Events in Sweden begin with fun and frivolity as Tinkler falls in love with a stripper, but things turn dark when brutally disfigured corpses start to show up.
The group called the Storm Dream Troopers released a record titled Attack and Decay in two vinyl versions, one in audiophile format and one in regular vinyl format. The Catholic Church banned the album and had its followers in Sweden buy up all the copies to “protect” the public.
Now, years later, the rarity of Attack and Decay has pushed the prices of both vinyl versions into the High Price stratosphere.
While the Vinyl Detective discovers the secret behind the two versions, the killer is using the songs on Attack and Decay to orchestrate a series of murders. This sixth volume of the series presents a change of venue, new characters, and a very clever plot. The Vinyl Detectives series just keeps getting better and better! GRADE: A

I read something about this series a few years ago that made me want to give it a try, but the first place I looked was my library, and they didn’t have any books in this series at all, just three books that appear to be comic books or graphic novels. So my enthusiasm died pretty quickly then, but I still might give them a try.
Michael, I’ve been reading THE VINYL DETECTIVE series since it first appeared in 2017. It’s funny and witty and silly. Perfect for Summer Reading! Plus, you’ll learn about the art of collecting vinyl records, too!
I am completely unfamiliar with this series.
Patti, THE VINYL DETECTIVE series mixes record collecting with murder. The wonderfully kookie cast of characters keeps the plots moving in screwball fashion. Clearly, I enjoy THE VINYL DETECTIVE series since I’ve read all six volumes and I’m eagerly hoping for #7 to show up next year!
I enjoyed the first book in this series but – sadly – that’s all the further I’ve gotten.
I do have a couple more titles waiting in the wings though.
When time/inclination permits …
Beth, I think you’d enjoy the rest of THE VINYL DETECTIVE series…when time allows.
The weird thing is, you reviewed books 4 and 5, and I even commented on them, but I didn’t even remember them until checking back this morning! The last one I read was #3. I think you like the series more than I do, though I liked it well enough to read three of them.
Just checked and my library has the last two as e-books. I’m also behind on his Rivers of London series.
Jeff, I’m behind on the RIVERS OF LONDON series, too. I was hoping to get caught up…and then a dozen Library books showed up. THE VINYL DETECTIVE series makes me smile and takes me into a world of records and murder. You’ll notice I usually try to read this kind of silly novel during the Summer Time!
Jeff, Andrew Cartmel does not do the Rivers of London series (except the comic book versions). That’s Ben Aaronovitch.
i read the first book and enjoyed it and have been meaning to get the second from our library. May do that next week and take it to our cottage at Lake Winnipeg for some summer reading. I prefer light books while stretched out on the couch on our porch. My latest read is Don Winslow’s new crime novel set in Providence. RI.
