THE X-FILES, SEASON 11 FINALE

Thomas Wolfe wrote You Can’t Go Home Again and based on this 10-episode season, FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) should have retired and stayed away from this retread series. The magic of the original, iconic series is gone. The paranoia and conspiracy aspects of the original X-Files seasons now seem ordinary and pedestrian. The UFO aspects don’t resonate as they once did. Watching these new episodes was a slog. As B. B. King sang, “The Thrill is Gone.” Were you a fan of the original The X-Files? GRADE: C-

I thought there was one excellent episode. The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat. Written by Darin Morgan who wrote the best of the original series such as the Jose Chung and Clyde Bruckman episodes. It was the 4th aired and very funny. Otherwise a very pedestrian season.

Steve, you’re right about “The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat” being the pick of the litter. But the other nine episodes were sub-par.

I agree with Steve about that episode. And on the whole, it was better than last season although that may be faint praise. I don’t know what the matter is with Anderson’s voice but it is very wearing to listen to her raspy whisper. Ducovny ends up whispering too.

Patti, I agree with you on Gillian Anderson’s voice. It’s gotten very raspy. I have to watch THE X-FILES with CLOSED CAPTION on because of all the whispering.

Patti’s right – her whispering is so annoying. Plus, even by X-Files standards, everything is so damn dark that it’s hard to see. We’ve watched it on and off if there was nothing better on, but that one episode you mentioned was the only one close to the old series. I kept waiting for Alex Trebek and Jesse Ventura as Men in Black.

If even Jackie found it a slog to sit through, you know they were doing something wrong.

Other than “Jose Chung” one of my favorite episodes was “War of the Coprophages” with Bambi the cockroach expert. Both were in Season 3.

I never watched the series when it was originally on, and though I wanted to catch it in reruns, never did, would take too long. I have one friend who was hooked on the original, but didn’t mention watching the reboots.

Maggie, the original X-FILES captured the paranoia and craziness of the 1990s. Times have changed and this new X-FILES reboot just lacks the mojo of the original series.
