TURBOTAX 2012

I’ve been using TURBOTAX to do my taxes for over a decade. I’ve liked some versions better than others, but TURBOTAX beats doing taxes the Old Fashion Way. Actually, I think it took me longer to install TURBOTAX on my computer than it did to actually do our taxes. We have a very simple return. No foreign bank accounts, no second home, no RV, no mortgage, no pets, no exotic deductions. We have to pay the Feds $787 and NY State $870. I like to break even so this is as close as I could make it this year. I love the eFile feature in TURBOTAX. No more standing in line at the Post Office to mail our taxes! Hope you all get a nice tax refund!

George, I use it myself but I just go to the website–one less thing down-loaded to my computer! You’re right; it makes doing Taxes like paying on the computer.

Dan, I’m pleased that this edition of TURBOTAX includes Adobe printing that EXACTLY prints out the actual tax form down to the correct color.

Phil had trouble installing it too. But we already got our check back from them. Phil over withholds because he can’t bear to not get a check back.

What – no accounts in the Caymans or Cyprus? Good thing.

We e-filed on Saturday. Getting back a few hundred each from the state and the feds. Will your new roof and gutters give you a deduction next year?

Patti, Jackie agrees with Phil about getting money back. I’m like George – as long as I don’t have to pay out in April I’m satisfied.

Jeff, I’ll see what I can deduct from our home improvements next year. You and I are on the same page with taxes: breaking even is the best way to go.

I always try to break even–I don’t like to think I’ve given the government interest-free use of my money for a year. (I know I sound like someone in the Tea Party–but when it comes to money, I’m a bit of a curmudgeon.) I always pay someone to do my taxes–a local CPA who has a bookkeeping business, not a chain place. This year we got a small state refund and a larger one from the Feds. We’re using it to fund a long weekend in Houston this summer–Astros game, Menil art collection, and lotsa BBQ!

My folks used to do their taxes the week before Apr. 15th, then take them down to the Central Post Office around 11 pm the day they were do. I HATE putting things off like that!

Taxes are done, refunds have been received. Life is good.

“Taxes are done, refunds have been received. Life is good.” All you need now, Beth, is for Lent to end so you can go back to playing video games!

Beth, there are certain stories you get on the local news every year. Start with the fight over which was the first baby born on January 1. Another is the crowds going to the main post office across from Penn Station to make sure they get their returns in before midnight on April 15. I never got it either.

We used TurboTax before we moved here but now use a very reasonable tax preparer. We get Fed refunds but always have to pay Oregon state tax, in spite of paying quarterly estimated. Problem is my pension will not withhold for any state but CA. I overwithhold on Fed so it comes out close, but we always have to pay. It would be a nightmare if we didn’t have mortgage interest.

We got the Fed refund, and will be paying the State bill, plus the first estimated, next week.

Rick, Diane’s NY State Retirement is not taxed in NY State. If we moved to another state (other than Florida and Pennsylvania which have reciprocity agreements with NY State) we’d have to pay state taxes on our pensions (unless we picked a state with no state tax). So the tax situation is another reason we’ll probably Sit Tight right here.

George, I used to be a procrastinator (not about taxes, but other things – like bills) but now I want to get things done immediately. My sister is one of those procrastinators. For years she’d file last minute extensions even though she’d be getting a refund once she finally got her act together and did her taxes. I don’t get it. It just doesn’t take that long for most people. Be methodical, keep whatever you need in one place, then when you get your tax stuff in the mail you’re basically ready.

I haven’t done mine yet and when I do it’ll be with pen and paper. Since I’ll probably have to pay a lot, I’m in no hurry.

Bob, at my College the students in the ACCOUNTING program do people’s taxes for free. If you need help with your taxes, just head for the Business School at your local college or university for free help.
