After four seasons of biting humor, the vampires in What We Do In the Shadows return in Season 5 with several intriguing plot lines. Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nandor (Kayvan Novak), and Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) are back to their argumentative selves. Energy vampire (he sucks energy, not blood), Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), returns to normal after a season-long rebirth and is now working in the service industry. And all the vampires are ignoring Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), Nandor’s loyal familiar.
The Big Change is that Guillermo, after losing patience with Nandor who kept delaying his promise to make Guillermo a vampire, has a vampire friend bite him. However, the transformation to a vampire doesn’t go as planned for Guillermo. I do like Guillermo’s occasional bat ears! Dealing with a botched transformation should prove pivotal in these Season 5 episodes!
Nadja, whose vampire night club failed, is brooding over all the things going wrong in her Life. Then, Nadja discovers that her problems are being caused by a hex put on her. It will be fun to see how Nadja deals with that!
My favorite moment in the two opening episodes is the scene where Nadja’s ghost doll tries to get a new body she can have sex in — from a Build-a-Bear Workshop! Who saw that coming?
Are you a fan of What We Do In the Shadows? GRADE: B+ (so far)
This seemed to be right up my alley when I tried it earlier, but I could never quite get into it. Maybe I take vampires too seriously.
Michael, my favorite character is Nadja who also writes some of the episodes. You have to be in the mood for Dark Humor if you’re going to watch WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS.
What Michael said.
Patti, I like the off-beat characters and the loopy plots of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. Plus, there “season” is just a few episodes long.
Jackie is not a fan, so I watch these myself. I missed the first two episodes while we were away so I will watch for them t be repeated or appear On Demand. I loved the house flipping episode last season. And I wish they would bring back my favorite vampire, Beanie Feldstein.
Poor Guillermo is never going to get his wish, I’m afraid.
Jeff, I’m not going to comment on Guillermo’s situation, but I’m with you on Beanie Feldstein. And that house-flipping episode is a classic!
I’ve never heard of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS so it follows that I’ve never seen an episode of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS!
Bob, you would laugh at the antics of these vampires!
FX is having a good summer (someone should) with the return of SHADOWS, the JUSTIFIED sequel series, the new last season of BREEDERS, and running RESERVATION DOGS on the cable feed for the first time. With the strike(s), I foresee more of the streaming series finding their way to cable and broadcast linear feeds, even if they are as langugage- or otherwise-censored as AVERAGE JOE was, somewhat improbably, on BET Her when it was cablecast there (the variations on the use of the four-letter synonym for copulate got a workout).
Todd, FX seems to operate under the radar for most viewers. You’re right about SHADOWS and JUSTIFIED.
