WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, Season Four

A group of vampires returns to FX and HULU for another season of madcap supernatural adventures. Nandor (Kayvan Novak) keeps his familiar, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), around to clean up after all the messes. Guillermo puts up with this because he dreams of becoming a vampire himself.  Laszlo (Matt Berry) and his wife, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), add spice to the proceedings. This is undeath as usual on Staten Island.

The creative team at What We Do in the Shadows continues to perfect its horror-to-comedy transitions. Sequences begin with the same ominous atmosphere as the most suspenseful scenes of the most terrifying films, but pay off with a laugh rather than a scream, occasionally both or some combination.  What We Do in the Shadows has been picked up for two more seasons so we have plenty of silliness to look forward to. Are a fan of these vampires?

I liked the film, and have enjoyed the series. Have you caught up with the New Zealand-based companion series WELLINGTON PARANORMAL–basically focused on two police officers and their commanding officer (with a few colleagues) who keep facing fanasticated situations? The CW network has been running it a season behind NZ tv, and one can see whole episodes on YouTube as well as CW’s on-demand and streaming services.

CBS/Paramount is apparently selling the CW to NextStar, which is driving a big purge of CW programming. Probably not a good deal, all around.

More correctly, Nexstar is “buying” 75% of the CW, and Paramount Global and Warner Discovery are retaining 12.5% each. I foresee less spending on programming.

Todd, the CW has struggled to achieve even factional success of the MARVEL TV series on Disney+. SUPERMAN & LOIS might be their ratings leader, but I stopped watching it. The CW marketing strategy seems to be aimed at teenagers…who would rather play with their iPhones or stream content from Netflix.

        Apparently, they have that handled:
        from DEADLINE:
Even though the network itself has consistently booked losses, the joint venture partners have made hefty profits by licensing CW shows to Netflix, sometimes agreeing to renew shows whose linear ratings did not appear to justify those re-ups. As they started to plan investments in their own streaming services, HBO Max and Paramount+, the current parents ended the CW output deal with Netflix in 2019.

Todd, that makes business sense…in the Long Run. I’m not sure there will be a big demand on Netflix for LEGENDS OF TOMORROW or BLACK LIGHTNING or TOM SWIFT.

Is this entire series available on HULU, or is it scattered around? What about the movie? I keep eyeing this series and thinking it’s too much to catch up with. But I’ll probably get to it at some point. I first heard of WELLINGTON PARANORMAL last night, and discovered three seasons of it on HBO MAX. I’m further behind on streaming stuff than I am with books.

Michael, last time I looked, HULU had all three seasons available. The movie is available on AMAZON Prime Video for a couple of bucks. Like you, I’m behind of streaming programs. I’ll give WELLINGTON PARANORMAL a try this weekend. A review will follow.

Michael, they’re only half an hour each, with commercials, so you can easily watch one or two a day.

I suddenly realized I hadn’t watched the last few episodes of series three, which I had on the DVR< so I've been catching up. Guillermo has become much more assertive now that he knows he's a Vampire Hunter. Colin Robinson is pretty tedious to me, and if there is a long sequence centered on him, I sometimes fast forward.

Funny show, and I love that is is set on Staten Island.

Jeff, Guillermo moved into First Place as my favorite character in WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. The writers have given him some great lines! Yes, vampires on Staten Island definitely brings a smile to my face!
