2026 WINTER OLYMPICS MILANO CORTINA (NBC & Peacock)

I’m not an ardent fan of winter sports but Diane and I have been tuning in to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina. Diane loves the ice skating. I enjoy the hockey games–both women’s and men’s.

Ilia Malinin (aka, “The Quad God) amazes us each time he steps out on the ice and performs stunts no other skater can. But not this time. Two falls in his routine doomed Malinin’s quest for a Gold Medal. He ended up in 8th place.

The most unexpected and surprising incident was when, in an emotional interview after he earned the bronze medal in the men’s 20 km. biathlon at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games on Tuesday, Sturla Holm Lægreid surprised audiences with an unprompted personal confession.

Three months ago, Starla Holm Laegreid said, he cheated on “the love of [his] life, the most beautiful and kindest person.” Which leads me to the question: If this woman was “the Love of your Life,” why did you cheat on her?

Are you watching the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina? What do you like to watch?

For some people. “the love of my life” is a part-time position lasting a day, a night, or even an hour or so. I don’t give much credit to what these people say.

Jerry, if someone is “The Love of Your Life” why are you cheating on her? I don’t blame the ex-girl friend for dumping him and being annoyed at his declaration at the Olympics.

Todd, confessing to cheating on “The Love of Your Life” at the Olympics will go down as one of greatest goofs of all time!

I’ve actually watched more of the Olympics this time around than I have in the past. Sometimes I just have it on in the background because there’s something so soothing about a snow-covered vista, even when athletes are hurling down the mountains at 75 mph. My heart went out to Ilia: I’m sure nerves got the better of him—only 21 and already dubbed “a god”, who wouldn’t have nerves? As for that cringy infidelity confession: it reminded me so much of those big public proposals you sometimes see at concerts or sports games: they seem more designed to push the woman into saying yes rather than an expression of heartfelt desire to get married. I’m glad that as of earlier this week, the “love of Laegreid’s life” had not forgiven him—in fact, she was very upset that he had thrust her into a spotlight she had not wanted. Good for her. I hope she doesn’t take him back.

Indeed. If you cheat on your first wife with the woman who becomes your second wife, what makes her think you won’t cheat on her?

Jackie agrees with Deb on this.

As for Ilia: Jackie always predicts that our “unbeatable” ice skaters will fall, because the pressure is too intense. Some (often, the younger ones who are too innocent to even think about pressure) seem unbothered, but the more attention you get, the worse it can be.

Perfect, similar example: we watch an episode of The Great British Baking Show (on Netflix) every Saturday night. We just wrapped up series 10 (7 in the U.S.), with two episodes last night. Steph was the favorite going into the final, after winning Star Baker 4 times, 3 in succession. Yet, she clearly totally choked, made elementary mistakes (that left her in tears), while cool, unruffled David ( no Star Bakers, but always close) coolly won the day.

Jeff, I agree with Jackie on pressure. Sure, these skaters practice thousands of hours but once the crowds increase and the TV lights are on, it’s a different game. Patrick and Katie are big fans of THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW. The time limits they put on the bakers really amps up the stress!

Oh, no, for whatever reason we’re not watching the Olympics at all this year. Jackie likes ice skating, but she hates the way NBC runs it in starts and stops. When we’re at home I can DVR it and fast forward, but not here. In general, I’m just not as interested in winter sports. Or maybe I’m just too old to care any more.

    Now get off my lawn.

Jeff, Diane loves the skating and I will watch the hockey–both Men’s and Women’s teams. I have no interest in skiing and bobsled racing.

I haven’t watched too much not sure why. Last night we watched curling for some strange reason. I usually watch ice skating and some sing anduge. I saw one luge run, I should have recorded it all and deleted what I wasn’t interested in

Maggie, thanks for the Valentine’s Day e-card! Diane and I will be watching the USA Men’s Hockey team take on Germany this afternoon. We pick and choose Olympic events, too.

We watch most of the prime time show, and sometimes live events during the day. We always enjoy figure skating, and some years (not recently, though) follow the competitions throughout the season. For the most part, though, I enjoy the unjudged events, determined just by speed. I don’t watch hockey because I generally have no idea where the puck is; looks good in the slow motion replays, though.

Ilia Malinin has said that despite his efforts to prepare for the emotions, going out onto the Olympic Final ice felt surprisingly different to him than any other competition. He’s handled the aftermath pretty well, all things considered.

Jeff, I think Ilia Kalinin will be on the Ice Skating Stage more many years. He has incredible talent. Now he has to learn how to handle the pressure of the Olympics.

Same in our house! Linda watches most of it with an emphasis on the figure skating, I don’t much care! A bigger problem right now is finding a replacement for the microwave! Lowes sold a damaged one, then sent us to two different stores for the same model, neither of which had one, despite them saying they did! I tried buying online but they kept trying to shove delivery and installation charges down my throat! Grrr!

I watched the ’72 Olympics with considerable interest–I was 7yo for winter, turned 8 during summer (I think, might’ve been over just before my b-day). It has been a slow decay in personal interest…jingoistic coverage too many years hasn’t helped.

    Glad it’s been reasonably good.
