56 DAYS [AMAZON PRIME Video]

James Wan’s script gets trashed by Nandini Balial on Roger Ebert.com: “…the writing and direction are so dreadful that most of the cast cannot bring the story to life, so each of the eight 48-minute episodes feels like it lasts for hours.”

So this is not a review but a warning. If you took 9 1/2 Weeks and Gone Girl and put them in a blender, 56 Days would be the result. But not in a Good Way.

There isn’t all that much on TV worth watching, and this certainly isn’t one of them. GRADE: D

Okay, you’ve convinced me. The next time I decide to gargle with razor blades to punish myself, I’ll watch this show instead.

It’s funny. A year or so ago when the book came out, it was an Amazon First Read, and I downloaded it for free. But after less than 50 pages I gave up. When I saw the appalling picture from the movie – Smug Boy Preens in Bed, above- I knew there was no way I would ever turn it on.

A D from George doesn’t happen often. Heed it.

Jeff, others who tried to read Catherine Ryan Howard’s 56 DAYS had the same experience that you did. The “D” grade is well earned!

I’ve been looking at some of the FRONTLINEs and NOVAs I’ve missed, and some of the PBS crime dramas, along with the likes of HBO’s DOOM PATROL (a few episodes in, it could go south) as well as the good series on the various good series with the occasional new episode on the other broadcast networks (I am still enjoying WILL TRENT and WATSON particularly, and still need to either get a decent antenna or replacement for the cable descrambler to watch DOC on Fox rather than having to wait for the current season to pop up sans commercials on HBO)…the RFK2 FRONTLINE is a big lump of how Brainworm has become what we behold and try to survive.

Further thanks for the tip-off…I doubt I’d dig in. Erotic drama on cable/streaming sure does have a relatively poor batting average.
