With 2.5 hours to go, I’m not sure I’l watch it. I’m having some serious stomach and headache problems (I ate something that didn’t agree with me on Friday and though it’s not food poisoning it’s still knocking me out. We just spent a hour or so in the garden, doing some winter transplanting and light pruning, and the fresh, chilly air seemed to help, but I may retire to the book room and try to get a little reading done. Since Barbara will be watching, I can check in with her now and then to see how big the margin is in favor of the Niners. I hope.
All over but the cursing. A couple of bullshit calls, a dropped pass or two, or the Niners might have won. I even watched most of the commercials. The one with the Clydesdale and the God Made a Farmer ads were great. The rest were lame IMHO.
Craig Ferguson and Lucy Liu’s sketch on why the power went out (which was almost the first I heard of the outage) from the post-game LATE LATE SHOW special is Utterly Convincing. As is the notion of all that strobing on the Knowles show (which was all Alice wanted to see once the game seemed to be going lopsided early on) helped a smidge. Knowles remains one of the most overrated performing artists of our time, in a tie with her husband and only a few others so overhyped. The only decent song in the medley was the old Destiny’s Child item…and her former chorusmates were at least as impressive.
I’m with Bob on the crummy ref job and the best commercials. I saw a “making of” piece earlier in the week and thought the Clydesdale commercial would be 30 sec longer. The real killer of the Niners was that opening 2nd half runback.
Highest rated SB so far, when they take out the blackout period…but the lateness of the end as a result led the rather good episode of ELEMENTARY to not get much of a ratings boost afterward, and the LATE LATE SHOW special had even less of a tail to grab onto…
Nielsen has revised the estimate, and CBS is still not too upset to call this the third highest-rated SB so far. Meanwhile, PBS came in a strong second at 9p with a new DOWNTON ABBEY (1/18th of the SB audience, as opposed to NBC, ABC, and Fox/FBC scrambling to get 1/50th-100th of the SB audience each with repeats–with 6.6 million viewers, overnight estimate, PBS would’ve probably come in second again at 9-10p ET/PT on a normal Sunday night).
Another killer non-call was on the Niners’ final third down play. Obvious holding, not called. It wouldn’t have scored a TD but would have put the ball around the 5 on the final 4th down play.
I skipped the halftime show. I’m not a fan of those frantic pop stylings and making the word “I” sixteen syllables.
They look pleased to see you.
I have no confidence in picking but I guess I’m in the majority in rooting for the ‘Niners tonight.
I’m taking the Ravens and the points, Jeff. But the Niners should win.
Want the 49ers to win, but those Ravens are an annoyingly pesky bunch.
Many of my gambling friends have made Serious Money in the Playoffs by taking the Ravens and the points, Drongo.

Hope you feel better, Rick. I usually watch the Super Bowl with a book in my lap.
I guess those spicy chicken wings I got for the game will have to wait… **sob**
Art Scott is eating his Megadeath wings during the Super Bowl, Rick. Just look for the mushroom cloud!
Bummer, Rick.
We were having custard at about 2:00 and the TV was on. Let’s just say the six hours of pre-game coverage was not essential viewing.
“Coming up next, we’ll be tailgating with Rachel Ray!”
Jeff, the Super Bowl hype is out of control! Seven and a half hours of filler before the game is ridiculous.
Lights out! Only in New Orleans. But the crucial question is are the lights out on Bourbon Street?
Deb, conspiracy theorists will be arguing about the Super Bowl Poweroutage for years!

That “non-call” in the end zone changed the game, Bob. I’m with you on the Clydesdale and “God Made a Farmer” commercials.
As usual, I bet on the Cowboys this year, and once gain they didn’t even show up.
I’m starting to lose faith in my system.
My gambling friends made a ton of money on the Ravens, Dan.

Rick, the Ravens’ Special Teams won the game with their play. John Harbaugh used to be a Special Teams coach.

We had to DVR ELEMENTARY, Todd. We’re “Early to bed, early to rise” types.

I’m an early to bed guy, too. Usually 3 or 4 a.m.

I skipped the Super Bowl Half-Time show, too, Bob. And, I skipped most of the Super Bowl outage by reading.
