FORGOTTEN MUSIC #44: QUEEN OF SOUL & KING OF SOUL

queen of soul
king of soul
These new 4-CD sets from Rhino Records collects the best of Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding. The sound is great! Hours of great listening can be found on these sets! I’ve been listening to Otis and Aretha since these sets arrived and they take me back to a time when the music was soulful and real. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Did you actually sit down and type out the names and times of all those tracks? If so, you’re either dedicated or crazy. I agree that there are a lot of good tunes here, but as Aretha got older she started souling up her songs to the points where they were more screams and grunts than singing. My favorite from her is I Say a Little Prayer For You, which is much more controlled. And Otis kills on Try a Little Tenderness. It’s almost as good as Jack Webb’s version.

I can never enjoy Respect because it was popular and ubiquitous when I was at Fort Campbell, my worst Army posting.

It’s hard to think of this music as “forgotten” because Aretha and Otis were so much a part of my musical upbringing, but coincidently I heard Steely Dan’s classic “Hey Nineteen” (now, ironically, itself a “forgotten” classic) the other day–and even 30 years ago the singer was lamenting that teenagers didn’t remember the Queen of Soul!

Deb, I never hear Aretha Franklin or Otis Redding on our local radio stations, even the “Oldies” station. I do hear some Steely Dan from time to time. My 19-year-old students would have no idea who the “Queen of Soul” is.

“I’VE BEEN LOVING YOU TOO LONG” is my favorite from Otis although “TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS” is right up there. And “RESPECT” of course.

You can’t go wrong with those collections. I just love Otis Redding, who was only 26 when he was killed. I can never get enough of him doing “I’ve Been Lovin’ You Too Long” or “Try a Little Tenderness” in Monterey Pop. No wonder he blew that audience away, and with Book T. and Steve Cropper & Duck Dunn, wow. Amazing. They were smart to use so much of his music in THE COMMITMENTS.
