Diane and I read Lisa Genova’s Still Alice years ago when it was first published. The story of a middle-aged college professor who discovers she’s suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s is a chilling story. Julianne Moore’s performance in this movie version shows the heart-breaking decline of the professor’s memory and life. This is a grim movie, but well worth seeing. GRADE: B+
George, I’ll be catching the Oscars on replay tonight, hence I haven’t read anything about the show though I did read that Neil Patrick Harris was caught with his pants down; not sure I want to see that. Julianne Moore is a fine actress and I have generally liked her movies.
Prashant, I went to sleep before the Oscar ceremony ended. It’s too long for my taste. Julianne Moore won a deserving Oscar for her performance STILL ALICE.
We were going to see this last week but they only had seats down front and I’m too old for that. We will see it soon.
Jeff, don’t rush to see STILL ALICE. Although it’s a good movie, it sure is a buzz-kill.
I am ready to skip it but Jackie has professed an interest in seeing it.
Jeff, Julianne Moore’s performance is worth watching. But STILL ALICE is a grim movie. Go in prepared.
As for STILL ALICE, the clip was enough. Alzheimer’s scares the daylights out of me, I don’t think I could watch it.
Rick, STILL ALICE gives a realistic portrayal of the progression of Alzheimer’s. It’s frightening…and disturbing.
George, you went to sleep before 9:00? Heavens. [joke] I watched the last 40 minutes or so. As much as I dislike the thank you speeches, I like to find out who won. So glad Redmayne got best actor, must have been a difficult role. This was the most politicized Oscars in memory; seems everyone has an “issue” to air. I guess if there was a big winner this year it was Birdman, but it won what, three? Boyhood got none? I think the original score was a mistake, both THEORY and IMITATION GAME were better.
Rick, there’s plenty to quibble about with the Oscar winners. Of the 8 nominated films for BEST MOVIE, I thought BOYHOOD was the most original. It took 12 years to make it. It’s an historic film that will be studied in Film Schools for years. The “political” speeches have become a tradition at the Oscars.
She was good but I though Alec Baldwin was awful. And it was sort of by the numbers. I didn’t learn enough about her before the disease hit. I thought IRIS was better and so too AWAY FROM HER.
Patti, I was more impressed with AWAY FROM HER, too. Sadly, it’s the Alzheimer’s that is the real star of these types of movies.
Rick, Birdman got four awards – Picture, Director, Original Screenplay and Cinematography, a
L of which I agree with. Boyhood got Supporting Actress.
IRIS was one of the most depressing movies I’ve ever seen, if brilliantly acted. AWAY WITH HER was well done too.
Linda and Kristine saw the movie. I had no interest in it. Downer movies hold no interest for me no matter how well acted.
Bob, Diane and I had read the novel version of STILL ALICE so we wanted to see the movie version. Although Julianne Moore’s performance is terrific, the movie is a complete downer.
