Michael Caine plays a retired composer/conductor. Harvey Keitel plays an 80-year-old movie director who is trying to make one last film that will be his “testament.” Both men are friends and are spending time at an exclusive spa in Switzerland. Caine is concerned about his daughter (played by Rachel Weisz). This is a film about aging and legacy. Geezers will find a lot to think about in this movie. GRADE: B
Sorrentino is a very fine filmmaker (most of the time) and his work always looks great too – looking forward to this, thanks George.
Sergio, YOUTH looks great on the screen. Its message is thought-provoking.
George, I try and see as many Michael Caine films as I can. Harvey Keitel is a very fine actor too.
Prashant, you’ll enjoy YOUTH. Both Caine and Keitel are terrific!
George, if I see any old people I’ll tell them you recommend it.
Dan, old people are the audience for this film. They’ll get it where younger viewers might be mystified.
Pass. The reviews were terrible.
What isn’t Paul Dano in these days. I saw him in the recent WAR & PEACE miniseries too.
Jeff, Paul Dano was the “young” factor in this film You’re right: Dano is everywhere.
I don’t have high hopes for this making the Milwaukee area.
The Lady in the Van is nowhere to be seen here.
Beth, THE LADY IN THE VAN opens here this weekend.
I liked his last film even more but this one will do. 45 Years is an even better commentary on age.
Patti, 45 YEARS hasn’t opened here yet. We want to see it.
If I need a commentary on age, I just need to try and get out of bed in the morning, then look in the mirror. The world looks fine when I look out of my eyes, but not so good when I look at them, or any part of me.
Rick, getting out of bed is a good indicator of how the day is going to proceed.
Speaking of old, I have a three hour dental appt. this morning (old crown out, grind under, new crown on) and a urology appt. tomorrow. God, I hate doctors.
Rick, Diane and I both got new crowns last week. Parts wear out…
Yeah, I’m really interested in seeing a movie with Hanoi Jane!
Bob, I was wondering if you’d notice that Jane Fonda makes a cameo in this movie. She’s only on screen for about 2 minutes.
That’ll be netflix for me. My next one up has to be star wars (didn’t see before due to coughing, etc) the new coen brothers one is also a “must see” for me.
Off topic, I saw a johnny carson with richard harris that was very good. In his monologue, he talked about a suggestion to bus/move the ice from buffalo to Calif. due to the drought. I remember after Katrina I thought maybe they could ship ice to put in the gulf to lower the water temp. The next carson has joan embry from the san diego zoo, and those are hysterical. One of our local news stations tried it some years ago, but the anchor was spooked by the animal, and basically hid. He looked cowardly compared to carson.
Maggie, it’s hard to believe the consistent quality of Johnny Carson’s humor. The guy was a comic genius!
