Hard Case Crime is reprinting Erle Stanley Gardner’s Turn On the Heat first published in 1940. Turn On the Heat, the second book in the Donald Lam/Bertha Cool series, features Donald Lam searching for a woman who has been missing for 21 years. I’m a fan of the early Lam/Cool books. Hard Case Crime has also published the “missing” Lam/Cool mystery, The Knife Slipped. You can read my review of The Knife Slipped here. It’s great to have these Hard Case Crime editions available. The writing is crisp and the plots are delightfully twisty!
Charles Ardai is the Indiana Jones of Publishing, and Hard Case Crime is our only hope to save Civilization as we know it.
Dan, you are so right! HARD CASE CRIME is one of my favorite publishers.
George, I loved Gardner’s Perry Mason books, but I loved his “A. A. Fair” books even more. Evidently, there are a lot of readers who felt the same.
Jerry, I’m glad to see TURN ON THE HEAT back in print. I really like the early Lam/Cool books. HARD CASE CRIME is doing a great job reprinting this series.
I agree with you, both on the Fair books and Hard Case Crime in general. TURN ON THE HEAT was the first Cool & Lam book I ever read, back in 1973. I still have a couple on the shelf waiting to be read, and I need to pick up the newly published one.
Jeff, the first dozen Lam/Cool books are my favorites.
Good pick, George. I haven’t read this one.
Rick, you’ll enjoy TURN ON THE HEAT. This new HARD CASE CRIME edition is excellent!
