With the End of the Book seemingly around the corner, a cornucopia of fabulous design and artwork is a welcome surprise. McSweeney’s, the high end literary journal, has been around for a dozen years. This volume celebrates the award-winning art and design that made the journal and the other projects so special. The Art of McSweeney’s features hundreds of images, along with interviews of collaborators such as Chris Ware and Michael Chabon. Insights into McSweeney’s quirky creative process and the visual experience of reading make this collection endlessly interesting. Wonderful eye candy! GRADE: A
With all the magazines we get, this should have been one of them.
I’ve admired all the MCSWEENEY publications, Patti. Craftsmanship still exists in publishing.
No the End of The Book is NOT around the corner. Stop it. Stop it right now. La la la, I can’t hear you, la la la…
I hope I’m wrong, Rick, but I think books like THE ART OF MCSWEENEY’S will vanish like the dinosaurs.
Well, all the magazines from that concern are certainly better than Eggers’ own writing, wither in prose or for the screen. I certainly like certain issues of MCSWEENEY’S more than others, and that magazine better than THE BELIEVER, and the HMCo annual BEST NON-REQUIRED READING better on average than McS. Noble work being done with literacy and related matters. Pity Eggers is such a poor writer himself.
This kind of book will disappear less quickly than the typical big-publisher trade book.
I totally agree with you, Todd. That’s why I bought THE ART OF MCSWEENEY’S as soon as it was published. I’m sure the print run was small and the book will be a collector’s edition before the year is out.
Funny, as I’ve been catching up on Chabon’s books lately.
I haven’t been able to read Eggers either, Todd. I thought I was the only one.
Like Todd, I consider Eggers overrated as a writer, Jeff. I do admire his editing and publishing, though.
