Although this book isn’t forgotten–it’s just been published–many of the stories inside these covers have been forgotten. Loren Estleman should be part of any conversation that includes Hammett, Chandler, and Ross Macdonald. Estleman’s long and varied career produced excellent mysteries, westerns, and short stories. Now, we have all the Amos Walker stories in one fine volume. The Amos Walker series brings Detroit and its environs to life. If you haven’t read this series, you’re missing some the finest private eye novels ever written. These 33 short stories capture the excellent writing and sharp characterization of Estleman’s novels. After reading the stories (published from 1982 to 2010) in Amos Walker: The Complete Story Collection you’ll see why Estleman’s work compares with the genre’s greatest.
Thanks, George. I didn’t know it was coming out. I ordered it.
See you next weekend, all. Off to Vegas.
Have a great time in Vegas, Jeff! And happy 40th Anniversary to you and Jackie!
I have Amos Walker, Detroit, a picture book of his settings. Enough to scare your socks off.
A few of the stories in AMOS WALKER: THE COMPLETE STORY COLLECTION will scare your socks off, too, Patti. I’ll have to look for that picture book.
Estleman is a terrific writer. More people should be reading him.
I absolutely agree, Bill. Estleman is a brilliant writer who should be more well known.
These days, Patti, Detroit itself is enough to scare your socks off…
I doubt I’ve read more than a handful of these stories. I also did not know this was coming out, but I’m again in the Forbidden Zone (though 3 things came yesterday) so it will have to go on that “Later, after the Move list. Sigh.
I live my life in the FORBIDDEN ZONE, Rick.
Not read a lot of Estleman. The Page Murdock novels, the Holmes pastiches, and Bloody Season. That’s it, I believe.
You’d like Estleman’s Amos Walker series, Randy. Very professional writing.
I love the Amos Walker stuff and have enjoyed the times I spent with Estleman, I was in the Detroit area the summer of 1987 and Loren I got together 3 or 4 times for dinners and conversation. Very wonderful memories.
I’ve met Estleman and he’s always been gracious, Scott. I can imagine how much fun you and he must have had over dinner.
I wasn’t aware of this collection, either, so many thanks for the heads-up!
AMOS WALKER: THE COMPLETE STORY COLLECTION was just published, BV. Glad to give the heads-up on a wonderful book.
I agree with your assessment. I’ve read his mysteries, Westerns, and historicals and think he’s a brilliant writer. I will order this the next time I buy some books.
You’ll enjoy AMOS WALKER: THE COMPLETE STORY COLLECTION, Bob. I heard you had a great time at BOUCHERCON.
