Christmas music has been blaring in stores and on local radio stations since the day after Halloween. I like Christmas music, but there is so much mediocre Christmas music out there that I have to resort to listening to my own Christmas CDs when I’m driving around or at home.
I became an Enya fan back in 1988 when I heard Watermark. Then I bought all of Enya’s albums as they were released. And Winter Came (2008) presents Christmas songs you’re not likely to hear in stores or on the local radio. But, they are beautifully arranged and sung by Enya. If you want to get into the Christmas spirit, listen to And Winter Came and feel the real joy of the season! GRADE: A

I actually have Enya’s version of my favorite, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” on my Christmas playlist. I’m not familiar with many of the other songs here, but I’m assuming they all have that very distinct “Enya” sound.
Deb, like you, I’m a fan of the distinct “Enya” sound. I also love the cover on this album!
Well, it might be a respite from “Mele Kalikimaka,” which seems to be the most-played Christmas song this year on the local “All hits, all the time” station! Second most spun, “White Christmas” by the Drifters. Probably not a coincidence that both were featured in movies near and dear to Gen-X’ers.
Fred, our local radio stations play “All I Want for Christmas is You” and “Jingle Bell Rock”–an older audience demographic…
Let’s not forget crap like “Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas.”
Hard pass on this.
Jeff, “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” gets a lot of airplay here, too.
My father had an abiding hatred for the anti-classic “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth” and I could see where he was coming from.
‘Homer and Jethro parodied the song as “All I Want for Christmas Is My Upper Plate”, on their 1968 album _Cool Crazy Christmas_.’ –current WIKIPEDIA article.
George, are you familiar with Loreena McKennitt? I think of her as “like Enya, but with more substance.” Her Christmas album is A Midwinter Night’s Dream, and it’s exceptional. I think all of her albums are wonderful, actually.
Jeff, Great Minds think alike! I have Loreena McKennitt’s A WIDWINTER NIGHT’S DREAM scheduled for next Thursday. Diane have seen Loreena McKennitt in concert twice and she was fabulous!
Another vote for LMc, ahead of Enya.
Todd, I like both Enya and Loreena McKennitt, but I’ve seen McKennitt in concert twice so I’m a bit partial…
Yesterday I heard some Xmas music that was all jazzy, bebop and I couldn’t wait to get out of the store.!
Bob, jazzy, bebop, and rap versions of traditional Christmas songs drive me crazy, too!
