BARGAIN OF THE WEEK: THE BUCCANEERS

Hoist the Jolly Roger, pirate fans (and you know who you are!). I watched The Buccaneers as a kid and loved the characters, especially Robert Shaw as Captain Dan Tempest (he was later to find fame in another sea adventure, JAWS). I’m a sucker for swashbuckling action and these episodes are full of it. Yes, the series is 50 years old. Yes, there are occasional “quality” problems as you might expect from TV programs of this vintage. But, for the bargain price of $12.99 at AMAZON ($12.94 at Sam’s Club for a slightly different set), you can own three DVDs of pure enjoyment. Jack Sparrow, watch out!

Ha ha, they had tv when you were a kid?

I may get this set just to wipe out the memory of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN.

The latest issue of the New Yorker has an article on pirates. I think the writer takes too sunny a tone, but it is a pretty interesting piece.

Our first TV had about a nine inch screen, Drongo. And, it was a pretty snowy picture even with the “rabbit-ears” antenna. But even so, programs like ROBIN HOOD and THE BUCCANEERS were magical. Maybe that’s why these old TV shows resonate so powerfully with me today. I’ll look up that NEW YORKER article on pirates. Thanks for the recommendation!

Too bad they couldn’t have gotten a (young) Errol Flynn to be the star. This guy always looked too young and “fresh”, somehow. There needs to be a cable TV channel with this kind of stuff so we don’t have to fill our homes with DVD sets!!!

You’re right about the need for a “classic TV” channel, Rick. You’re think with 500 channels to fill, Time-Warner, Comcast, Direct TV, etc. would make this primo stuff available.

I watched and enjoyed this one, too, but I’d be hard pressed to recall even one epiosde. Maybe I’ll track down the DVD set and stash it with my other unwatched DVD sets.
