BATTLE CREEK (CBS)

I watched the new CBS cop show, Battle Creek, and it was good enough for me to recommend it mildly. It’s basically The Odd Couple with cops. Dean Winters (the “Mayhem guy” in those All-State commercials} is a scruffy home-town Battle Creek cop. He’s partnered with a slick FBI agent played by Josh Buhamel who seems to know all the answers. Patti Abbott says Battle Creek is “not half bad.” That’s about the size of it.

Bob, the whole idea behind th “Mayhem guy” commercials is for the audience NOT to like the commercials…but notice them amid all the other advertising noise.

Perhaps ten years ago when they wrote it, it would have seemed like pretty great stuff but the competition is much fiercer now. I almost never judge by the first episode because they throw so much into it in terms of production values. Did you see American Crime?

Patti, the Meyersons were going to check out AMERICAN CRIME. I did watch DIG. My guess is that BATTLE CREEK will be canceled after its run.

AMERICAN CRIME was somewhat of a downer but compelling. DIG was incomprehensible Apocalyptic crap.

    We’ll watch BATTLE CREEK tonight.

We tend to think of WInters as Ryan O’Reilly on OZ, which surely paved the way for Mayhem.

I know what the intent of the Mayhem commercials is. My reaction is to not do business with that company, which isn’t hard because I have a different insurance plan anyway.

Since I don’t watch much “new” network TV, I’m enjoying Battle Creek.

And now you’ve answered the question of “where have I seen Dean Winters before?”
