BUFFALO BILLS VS. HOUSTON TEXANS

Today, the Buffalo Bills are 10-point underdogs in their game with the AFC leading team, the Houston Texans. To make matters worse, Wade Phillips, the Texans’ brilliant defensive coordinator, used to be the head coach of the Bills. Think he might want to show Bills’ owner Ralph Wilson he made a Big Mistake firing him? I expect an ugly game and another Bills loss. How do you think your favorite NFL team will do today?

Two of my teams, the ‘Skins and the Panthers, play each other. I will be pulling for the ‘Skins. People used to ask me how I can pull against the home team. My answer was I’ve been a ‘Skins fan three times longer than the Panthers have been a team. You don’t just throw that out the window because a team suddenly appears in your state.

The Redskins and Panthers game looks like a vision of the future, Randy. RG3 is the Real Deal. And Cam Newton has all the talent in the world. There should be a super Bowl in their futures.

I have to agree with you: until Ralph finally moves on the Bills are just not going to get back to their (semi-)glory days.

We’ve been away and I have had other things on my mind but I am trusting the Giants will get past the Steelers this afternoon. At least I hope so.

Fortunately, as I’d expected our neighborhood was fine. There are a few trees down but nothing like the really hard hit sections. And fortunately I filled the gas tank before we left town so will have no problem waiting for the gas to start pumping again.

Smart, filling up before you left for Vegas, Jeff! I was watching a little of the Steelers/Giants game and they showed a kid with sign which said: WE DON’T HAVE GAS, WE DON’T HAVE POWER, BUT WE HAVE ELI!

Actually, it was quite interesting. As you know the Monday Night Football game was in Glendale. Our hotel had quite a few people there for the game – they were even offering a $25 shuttle to the stadium – and most of them seemed (by their jerseys) to be 49ers fans.

The Saints play the Eagles tomorrow on Monday Night Football–a game that was probably thought to have exciting playoff implications when it was scheduled; now, not so much. I have no hopes for the rest of the season for the Saints; and now that the NFL has vacated Sean Payton’s contract (effectively making him a free agent at the start of next season), the days of the ‘Aints will soon be returning to us!

/Glad to hear all us well for you, your wife, and your neighborhood, Jeff. Safeguard your gasoline…judging by the news, New York’s about to enter Mad Max times!

There’s an old saying that governments are three days away from anarchy, Deb. Those folks in NYC and New Jersey who have been without power and now gas are about to explode! Mad Max, indeed!

I have no idea, not even who is playing whom. So I’ll just be glad the Ducks porous defense managed to hold a couple of times while the offense passed 60 points to beat USC.

That UO/USC came was wildly entertaining, and it’s always a delight to beat the Trojans. But the Duck’s defense was lousy, and their special teams were scarcely less so.

George, getting a mere Bowl game is no longer enough for Oregon. We want a national title.

Well, the Giants finally succeeded in finding a way to lose after failing to do so last week in Dallas. Lucky for them the rest of the division is under .500.

Cuomo promises the gas is coming, George. We’ll see. On the way out of the airport yesterday I did see several long gas lines. All of them – as well as the closed stations – had police guarding them.

I saw on MSNBC that some of the people in those long gas lines were turned way by the police because they didn’t have the right license plate number, Jeff.

Now that I consider the matter, it’s kind of odd talking about about football when so many people on the east coast are suffering. Hope for their sake it doesn’t get too cold tonight.

I ran out of gas in Meridian, Mississippi, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and there was one gas station open and waited in line for over an hour (oh, I could write a book about my experience following Katrina!). Police were guarding the line–and also making sure people weren’t filling up additional gas cans to sell later at a profit.

When Western NY was hit by the surprise October Snowstorm a few years ago and 500,000 people were without power, we had some of the same experiences you did, Deb. Many of the gas pumps wouldn’t work because of the lack of power so I had to search for a working gas station to get gas for a generator. It was three days of Hell before the power came back on. For others, it took a week more to get electricity. If you wrote that book, I’d read it!

Well, Drongo is right about Oregon. They have a more challenging schedule than Kansas State the rest of the way, as in playing a couple of top 25 teams. Maybe they can sneak into the #2 spot…

Seattle won and kind of strange game, but like the Ducks they have weak defense. What is it about some of these west coast teams??
