As I’ve mentioned in other blog postings, audiobooks became my major source of delight and diversion while I spent almost two weeks in REHAB. The Lortabs I was taking to manage the pain turned my brain to mush. I couldn’t read. Or, rather, I could read the same paragraph over and over with no retention. However, my drug-addled mind had no problem with audiobooks. Art Scott sent me a fistful of audio CDs of a number of Bertie and Jeeves stories before my surgery. I took the CDs to REHAB and had a rollicking good time listing to these P. G. Wodehouse classics. And Martin Jarvis, the skilled narrator of these stories, captures the characters of Bertie and Jeeves perfectly. If laughter is the best medicine, listening to these wonderful CDs that Art sent me hastened my recovery. Highly Recommended! Thanks, Art!
TABLE OF CONTENTS:
“Jeeves Takes Charge”
“Jeeves and the Unbidden Guest”
“The Rummy Affair of Old Biffy,”
“Clustering Round Young Bingo,”
“The Artistic Career of Corky”
Shamefully I have never read or listened to or saw these.
CARRY ON, JEEVES, either the book or audiobook, is the perfect introduction to P. G. Wodehouse, Patti. You will love the wit and humor of these stories.
Patti, there are several collections of short Jeeves & Wooster stories and many, many other Wodehouse collections. Check the library!
I actually downloaded a set of 38 Wodehouse novels for $1.99, Jeff. What a deal! But I’m very fond of these audiobooks that Art Scott brought to my attention. Great fun!
Jarvis took over the Wodehouse audiobook franchise after the death of Jonathan Cecil, who is equally wonderful. I’ve got Cecil reading (wrong word really, performing is nearer the mark) Thank You Jeeves in the car right now. Normally I prefer full cast dramatizations to readings, but I find the BBC radio Jeeves dramatizations with Michael Hordern and Richard Briers inferior to Cecil or Jarvis. Hordern is particularly disappointing as Jeeves, too dry and one-note.
I’ll keep my eyes peeled for those Jonathan Cecil Wodehouse CDs, Art. Thank you again for sharing the Martin Jarvis CDs with me. They sure perked me up during REHAB!
I have read some and watched some of the ones on PBS but not listened to any of the audiobooks. Sound great.
Martin Jarvis captures the essence of Wodehouse in his narration on the audiobooks, Rick. Highly recommended!
