CARS 2

Cars 2 surprised me. I was expecting another adventure with Lightning McQueen and his car buddies similar to Cars 1. But those clever guys at Pixar decided to make a James Bond movie without James Bond and featuring animated cars. Yes, Cars 2 has as much action and thrills as a Bond movie. Its convoluted plot will lose most 6-year-olds, but adults will follow the tangled clues just fine. This is one of those rare occasions where the sequel is better than the initial movie. Don’t miss this one! GRADE: A

Interesting. Most critics I’ve read thought it wasn’t as good as the first CARS. But then, I didn’t think the first one was anything special so maybe I’ll agree with you (once it comes on video).

We finally got around to seeing TOY STORY 3 last night. Now that was worth seeing.

Pixar also included a TOY STORY feature before CARS 2, Jeff. Diane liked it better than CARS 2! TOY STORY 3 was one of my FAVORITE MOVIES of 2010. Classic!

Kevin dismissed it as having too many bad guys but he still wants the new cars.
He doesn’t like movies with bad guys but I can’t get him to Winnie the Pooh either. Can I possibly be grandmother to a non-movie lover. I hope not.

I can’t agree with you here George – this is probably the weakest Pixar movie. It should have be rated PG instead of G because of the violence – there are huge numbers of complaints online from mothers about having to leave the theater with their 2 and 3 year-olds because they were scared – and I saw two mothers take out their young children and not return in the lightly attended showing I went to.

While this feature has really terrific animation, and has some really good action sequences, it also has sections that drag badly, and the plot is overly convoluted. Pixar may not have fallen with this one, but they stumbled badly. I would rate it a B-.

You’re right about the scary parts, Stan. While I was watching CARS 2 I kept wincing when the Bad Guys were announcing they were going to kill a Good Guy. That just struck a Sour Note for me. Pixar usually isn’t that graphic. I suspect more adults will like CARS 2 than kids will.
