CHER IN CONCERT IN VEGAS

After enjoying our visit to San Jose, Livermore, and GOOGLE Land, we decided to break up the return trip by stopping in Vegas for a few days. We stayed at the MGM Signature (Tower 3) in a wonderful suite. We had dinner with our niece, Elise, who works as a lawyer for the National Labor Relations Board. Diane and I don’t gamble (we’ve taken too many math courses), but we do love the food and shows in Vegas. We grew up listening to Cher’s music. “Classic Cher” at the Park Theater at the Monte Carlo fit the bill: fun music, video clips of andThe Sonny and Cher Show, a film montage of Cher’s movie roles, and an amazing 20+ costume changes! An entertaining concert! Cher is 70 years old, but doesn’t look it. But at one point in the concert, Cher said, “What’s your granny doing tonight?” Check out the Set List below. Not a fan. Esp dislike Turn Back Time & Gypsys, tramps & Thieves. At least it wasn’t Celine Dion.

I would never see Jlow in anything. I think she’s a disgusting person, but to each his/her own.

I think Believe is my favorite, though there are so many others I like.

IIRC, Cher grew up in the Imperial Valley of Ca., where I spent a lot of time.

I’ll check our METV for sonny and cher shows. I loved them

Maggie, I watched THE SONNY AND CHER SHOW long, long ago. It was fun for the times. I liked the chemistry between Sonny and Cher.

Always found the choice of musical acts in Vegas dismal-Wayne Newton, J Lo, Brittany Spears, Cher etc. The few times I’ve gone there I always have managed to see Penn and Teller.

Steve, my wife and daughter saw SPAMALOT in Vegas a few years ago. I took my mother and sister to see MAMMA MIA! at Mandalay Bay, too. Great shows!

“I Got You Babe” was an instant success with us in 1965, one of the great “Wall of sound” arrangements – we really enjoyed those, totally fifferent from what German radio was serving us, kitschy Schlager …

Wolf, I love the harpsichord sound in “I Got You Babe.” “I Got You Babe” proved to be an enduring song over the years.

I like Cher’s music from her Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves/Dark Lady era–in other words, the real melodramatic stuff. Fun fact: Did you know “The Nights the Lights Went out in Georgia” was written for Cher, but Sonny vetoed it, saying it was too critical of the South AND would alienate the listening public there? If you listen to Vickie Lawrence (who had a big hit with the song) singing it, you can hear the phrasing was clearly intended for Cher.

Anyway, Cher will always be Loretta Castorini in one of my all-time favorite movies, Moonstruck.

Deb, Cher showed some film clips from MOONSTRUCK in her video montage during the concert. She was great in that Loretta Castorini role!

Jeff and Jackie Meyerson showed me and Judy the Moonstruck house long ago when we visited NYC. Nic Cage! I’m a Cher fan and like most of her music.

As long as isn’t that horrible Turn Back Time song – one of the few things that make me hit the off button – I’m OK. I thought “I Got You Babe” was a good choice for GROUNDHOG DAY (obviously, the show didn’t want to pay for the rights to use it) and I’d probably go with that, though I do get a kick out of “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves.”

Jackie has an important question: did you eat at the Bellagio Buffet? She loves Vegas, as you know.

Yes, the Moonstruck house is still there, but sadly, Cammareri Bakery is no more. They made great Italian bread.

Jeff, I’m sure the choice of some of Cher’s songs in concert was influenced by showmanship and costuming. “Half Breed”–not one of my favorites–features Cher in a stunning head-dress that reaches the floor!

Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves was (at least for us in Europe) really unexpected – a protest song from Cher? Took me a while to translate and interpret it – my English wasn’t too good then, but I managed in the end.

      PS:
I have to confess that somehow I find Las Vegas too kitschy, can’t spend too much time there. It was funny the last time I was there with my “new” Hungarian wife. She didn’t like it either, too artificial she said! So after a nice evening on the terrace of a bar on the corner of the Strip, having a very nice conversation with the Austrian owner (!) we left the next day …

Though if there had been a show on by Cher or some other of our favourites it might have been different.

Wolf, three days is about my limit in Vegas. The temperatures last week were in the 70s (ideal for me!). This week Vegas is in the 100s! Brutal heat!

I love Cher but I think it’s time for her to step away from the plastic surgery, Botox, whatever, and retire.

She was beautiful back in the day and I think she has a lot of talent but time is marching on.

The METV channel in our area runs the old Sonny and Cher Show; her great voice and those Bob Mackie gowns couldn’t be beat. I have a LOT of her albums/CDs and a couple of her movies so I’ll enjoy those.

Beth, Cher looks 20 years younger than her age. She moved around the stage pretty well, too. I enjoyed the concert and the audience was enthusiastic.
