Diane and I eat a salad almost every day. Diane usually prepares the salad with leafy greens like lettuce and spinach. She adds tomatoes, celery, peppers, carrots, and sometimes cheese.
But sometimes, we’re in a hurry so we resort to Wegmans Cole Slaw. It’s a fast, easy, and tasty substitute.
But a few weeks ago, Wegmans was totally out of Cole Slaw. Diane decide to buy Broccoli Slaw and give it a try.
Delicious!
The Broccoli, Carrots, Red Cabbage come together in a flavorful blend that’s satisfyingly crunchy. We add a dab of Marie’s Cole Slaw Dressing and it’s a salad fit for a Queen (and King)!
Do you like Salad? What kind?
Both make me happy. If it’s food, i’m easy.
I’m pretty happy with any salad sans meat–I’ll even take a sliced hard-boiled egg in mine. Broccoli slaw is definitely a crunchier item than Cole/cabbage slaw, and with more nutrients, usually, (The first supermarket salad bars I would frequent were those at Giant Food stores in Northern VA, before I went lacto/ovo/veg, and I would garnish mine with their rather good beef chili. $1.99 a pound, a deal even in ’84.)
I’ll probably make Alice a V8-ish smoothie for part of her breakfastt. She’s been looking forward to one for a week or so.
Todd, a friend of mine reduced his high blood pressure by drinking V8 Low Sodium every day.
Todd, since the Iran War, prices of vegetables–and everything else–have gone up. But by and large, vegetables are more affordable than meat. As I grow older, I prefer veggies over red meat.
I make a big salad every day for my lunch. The ingredients are usually some form of slaw (cabbage and/or broccoli based), cucumber, bell pepper, spinach, red onion, and tomatoes (fresh & sun-dried). I use a low-cal dressing (I like Skinny Girl’s Balsamic Vinaigrette, but their Raspberry Vinaigrette is also good). I’m not opposed to lettuce, but I find it browns so quickly that a lettuce I buy on Saturday is wilted & brown by Wednesday, so spinach is my default “lettuce” and cabbage/broccoli slaw keeps things crunchy.
Deb, same here. Diane and I have to eat the lettuce quickly before it turns brown. Most of our dressings are Low-Carb.
Who doesn’t eat salad? My grandson for one.
I like a cucumber, tomato, and feta salad with balsamic vinegar. We get a lot of Middle Eastern salads around here. Fatoush is a favorite.
Patti, Art Scott disdains veggies and salad. He is a meat guy.
Salad, yes. Cole slaw, no.
Caesar is our usual go-to salad, though “regular” salad with Italian dressing (olive oil and either wine vinegar or balsamic) is common too. And then there’s Greek. When we get coleslaw in a restaurant, I give mine to Jackie.
Jeff, Diane is picky about her Cole Slaw. Many times in restaurants, Diane will pass her Cole Slaw to me because it didn’t meet her requirements–she hates when it’s mushy. Broccoli Slaw, on the other hand, is always crunchy.
Also, cucumber doesn’t agree with me, so I trade my cucumbers to Jackie for her tomatoes, which she doesn’t eat.
Today, we’re going to a Greek restaurant for lunch, so besides the side salad they give you with the souvlaki, we order a large Horitaki salad, which has two huge slabs of feta.
As a kid I got used to my father’s favorite, a wedge salad with Bleu cheese. We do occasionally have that, but romaine is better nutritionally than iceberg lettuce.
Jeff, my favorite salad is the Caprese salad: fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil, seasoned with salt and olive oil, and often drizzled with balsamic glaze. We have a number of Italian restaurant who make great Caprese salads.
Yum. Our favorite, Gino’s, has a great caprese salad too, but since Jackie doesn’t eat tomatoes, I end up with a ton of them, as we usually share this and a house salad.
Jeff, Diane sometimes passes tomatoes to me during a restaurant dinner. She can’t take too much citric acid. I, on the other hand, have no problem with tomatoes or fruits.
If it is cooked into sauce, she’s fine, but not just the tomato itself.
That reminds me! I’ve been buying ready-made salads from Safeway recently but over the past couple of days they haven’t had any in two different stores! It never fails, as soon as I like something, it disappears! I was fond of the Thai salad! I don’t know what kind of dressing they used but it was outstanding!
Bob, I have run into that same problem. I was buy STARBUCKS DOUBLE-SHOTS at Walmart for a reduced price…and they discontinued it!
I buy ready made salads from Ralph’s/Kroger. I do pick out the cabbage as it makes me sick. I also remove the ribs from lettuce as I find them bitter. I always give my cole slaw to anyone who wants it.
Maggie, Diane and I enjoy some ready-made salads. But Diane will remove any tomatoes (and give them to me) and choose salads that have packaged dressing or no dressing at all.
Our salads have packets of dressing that I usually enjoy
Maggie, Diane is picky about dressings.
Both of those salads sound good, but we don’t have Wegmans. I don’t remember seeing any cole slaw mixes at the stores we go to, though there have been mixes with brocolli slaw but sometimes those have other ingredients that don’t work for me. But I will look around more to see what I can find.
