COLUMBIA PICTURES FILM NOIR CLASSICS I bundles five noir classics: The Sniper, The Big Heat, 5 Against the House, The Lineup, and Murder By Contract. This collection presents restored and remastered versions of these great films. You’ll see memorable performances by Lee Marvin, Kim Novak, Eli Wallach, Glenn Ford, and Gloria Grahame. The movies are introduced by Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann, and Christopher Nolan. This is a must-buy box set! I can’t wait for the next volume in this wonderful series! GRADE: A
I already have these, taped off Tv at various times, but it sounds worthwhile.
You will love this set, Dan! All five films have been restored and remastered. The results are impressive.
Have you watched them yet, George? I think I’ve seen maybe half of them.
I’ve watched THE BIG HEAT, THE SNIPER, and 5 AGAINST THE HOUSE, Rick. I’ve been so delighted with them that I decided to share my enthusiasm even though I still have THE LINEUP and MURDER BY CONTACT to watch. I’ll probably get to them this weekend.
I suspect it’s not the only one from a literary source, but the only one I know to be offhand is the William McGivern adaptation, THE BIG HEAT. Somebody knew Philly.
5 AGAINST THE HOUSE is based on a Jack Finney with the same title, Todd.
5 AGAINST THE HOUSE was adapted from a Jack Finney novel of the same name.
Oops, I should have read all the comments before I answered Todd with your answer, Drongo! Great minds think alike.
While reading your last comment George, I was thinking the exact same thing!
See, great minds do think alike, Drongo!
Excellent set of titles.
This is a wonderful box set, Jeff. And the films look very crisp and sharp!
I’d had my eye on this set on Amazon since it came out. The price is down to seven dollars and change per movie, so your review cliches it. It’s in my shopping cart now.
I’m also thinking about The Samuel Fuller Film Collection (It Happened in Hollywood / Adventure in Sahara / Power of the Press / The Crimson Kimono / Shockproof / Scandal Sheet / Underworld U.S.A.)
George, have you or anyone else seen this one?
Yes, Steve, I own the SAMUEL FULLER FILM COLLECTION, too. But you might want to wait for the Blu-ray version to come out.
And a Blue-ray player too, I suppose?
All seriousness aside, why wait? Problems with the current set?
I just bought a Sony Blu-ray player, Steve. It only cost $149 at BEST BUY (plus, I had some REWARD ZONE coupons that reduced the price!) Now, the majority of movies I’ll buy will be Blu-ray. Love high-definition!
