DONALD DUCK, VOLUME 3 By Carl Barks

I loved these comics when I was growing up and every time I read these magical pages I turn into a kid again. In a time when graphic novels have a different meaning, these adventures of Donald Duck and his nephews take on almost a mythic power. I love the Barks stuff, and have the collections. Really great stuff and the standard by which all other Duck-work is measured. But I also really, really like what Don Rosa has done, and recommend the collected Rose Scrooge volumes in addition to Barks.

I’m not normally tongue-tied and overwhelmed when meeting people I admire, but I was on the one occasion when I met Carl Barks, and somehow stammered out how much his stories meant to me. He taught me more about life, literature and language in my formative years than all the schoolteachers I had.

I feel the same way about those comics, Art. They were beautifully drawn and the stories were sophisticated for a six-year-old kid, but I got the messages Barks was communicating about Life. He was a great teacher and doesn’t get enough credit for that.
