EGG NOG TASTE TEST

My Impulse Control was weak when I was at our local liquor store picking up some wine for the Holidays. I spied an end cap with Christian Brothers Egg Nog and Evan Williams Egg Nog on SALE. I’d never tasted either of them so I gave in and bought a bottle of each.

After drinking the Christian Brothers Egg Nog and Evan William Egg Nog reinforced my long standing preference for non-alcoholic Egg Nog. The first thing I tasted with the Evan Williams Egg Nog was alcohol. It overpowered the eggy flavor I enjoy. Disappointing.

The Christian Brothers Egg Nog was a travesty! It was watery and bland. Another buying mistake! Yuck!

To rectify my Egg Nog mistakes, I went to Wegmans and bought my tried and true Egg Nog favorites: Hood Golden Egg Nog and Turkey Hill Egg Nog. You can’t go wrong with either one! Are you a fan of Egg Nog? What’s your favorite brand?

Not a big fan: I’d rather cut Bailey’s Irish Cream with heavy cream, pour it over crushed ice, add a sprinkle of nutmeg, and call it a day. The thing about eggnog is how rich and cloying it is—a quarter cup goes a long, long way. Early in our relationship, John and I hosted a Christmas party and decided to make eggnog from scratch: a pound of sugar, a dozen eggs, a quart of heavy cream, a quart of alcohol (brandy? whiskey?). It was overpoweringly rich and alcoholic. Everyone had a small sip and moved on. We ended up dumping most of it down the garbage disposal. An expensive lesson learned.

Deb, my brother is a big Bailey’s Irish Cream fan, too. Bailey’s, heavy cream, crushed ice and a sprinkle of nutmeg sounds delicious!

Neeru, eggnog is a rich, chilled, sweetened, dairy-based beverage traditionally made with milk, cream, sugar, egg yolk and whipped egg white (which gives it a frothy texture, and its name). A distilled spirit such as brandy, rum, whiskey or bourbon is often a key ingredient. Around here, eggnog is only available commercially in November and December.

    Yuck.

    Pass.

Jackie is with Deb on the Bailey’s. On our one and only trip to Ireland, we bought two bottles duty-free on the ferry back to the UK. Unfortunately, we had my great aunts and my grandmother over when we got home, and they drank it all!

I used to enjoy eggnog straight and later with rum. Then I quit drinking and haven’t had a taste for it since. A little goes a long way and your average bottle or carton is enough for a couple once a year and definitely too much for one person. I’m sure I’ll end up having a glass somewhere down the road but I’ve completely lost my taste for alcohol. Cheers.

Bryon, I drink a glass of red wine every night. It’s got 5% alcohol. A friend just gave me a bottle of bourbon for Christmas–100 Proof and 50% alcohol. That bottle will be re-gifted…

I said I would bring it to a holiday party but maybe most people don’t like it. I am lactose intolerant so I don’t usually drink it. I need to think of an alternative maybe.

Patti, you might want to try Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Eggnog: https://www.bluediamond.com/brand/almond-breeze/ab-almondmilk/refrigerated-almondmilk/nog/?gad_campaignid=21514070811&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADwAhwtWnRJ5DM6O7hpRKPeUxANvs&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=21514070811&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21514070811&gbraid=0AAAAADwAhwtWnRJ5DM6O7hpRKPeUxANvs&gclid=Cj0KCQiAr5nKBhCpARIsACa_NiNioyiXIhZ94LfcwanbA0O6mMWe6vZnDQlRqYNLwWzIbrs2iW6IEFwaAtZIEALw_wcB

Tracy, I drink a glass of eggnog almost every day from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Then eggnog disappears from the stores around here…until the following Thanksgiving.

I like eggnog but only have it occasionally. I bought a quart on sale at Kroger/ Ralphs after Thanksgiving and it lasted 3 days. We had our high school lunch group last Tuesday at a classmates home near her winery. She had eggnog with lunch as well as 2 of her wines. Merlot and Sauvignon. She gave me a bottle of each to take home. I enjoyed the Merlot but haven’t tried the Sauvignon yet. I had the eggnog at the lunch which wasn’t spiked, but didn’t matter as I rode there with friends.

I do like eggnog but I don’t have a very discriminating palate; most are fine with me.
Strangely enough, I don’t care for alcohol in it. My Mom always put Southern Comfort in it.

Not once in my life have I tasted eggnog and not once have I had the desire to try it! With or without booze! But I clipped the Puyallup Indians for $625 today and when I got home, I found Linda making a mince pie, which was excellent!

In my early years, I’d have a bit of virgin nog, and infrequently dilute it a bit with milk. Diabetes pretty much knocked both alc and non-alc nog off the menu, and I haven’t missed it too much. (For that matter, I like almond “milk”–no sugar added– a lot better than dairy milk these years, particularly with coffee.)

Is having it only at year’s end allow you not to get burned out? I must admit, “seasonal” flavors with seltzers and sodas are a bit irritating for those, like myself, who like a good flavor year ’round. (Though now there are rumblings about the artificial sweeteners in most sodas, etc., hastening or enabling dementia. The fun just Doesn’t Stop.)

Among the better Wegman’s seltzers if you’re in the mood are the Orange Pineapple and Cherry Pomegranate…pomegranate being the exotic-seeming ingredient that actually works quite well in a soda…the best of the Cascade Ice sodas I’ve tried is their Cranberry Pomegranate (though, sadly, just after I wrote all these kinds of drinks up on my blog, Cascade Ice stropped distribution east of the Mississippi, for sinister reasons probably related to the film series SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT, or an increasingly crowded marketplace in “alt” sodas).
