EXCELLENT CADAVERS: THE MAFIA AND THE DEATH OF THE FIRST ITALIAN REPUBLIC By Alexander Stille

excellent cadavers
Alexander Stille’s Excellent Cadavers tells the story of two Sicilian magistrates–Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino–who attempted to prosecute members of the Mafia. Both men were assassinated in 1992. Falcone and Borsellino uncovered a pattern of corruption in the government that led to the Mafia. While reading Excellent Cadavers I was reminded of the same type of corruption by the drug lords on our continent. If you’re in the mood for a vivid history of crime and punishment and more crime, I highly recommend Excellent Cadavers. GRADE: A

Some of the Insp. Montalbano books by Andrea Camilleri deal with the corruption in Sicily and Italy involving the Mafia, especially when Berlesconi was in power.

Not my thing, but I’m always interested in what you come up with. You probably have the broadest range on interests of anyone I know.

Off topic: I’m watching the shannara chronicles on mtv (strangely, not syfy) and as I don’t read SF, wonder what those of you who do think of this series.

Maggie, I read some Terry Brooks but abandoned the Shannara series after the first couple books. I heard MTV was developing a TV series based on the Shannara books but none of my students seem to be watching it.

I’m more concerned about what the drug lords in Mexico – and much of South America – are doing, but here there is great wealth and power to be gained by any means, graft will occur.
