First Reformed
Sicario 2
Roma
Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Mission Impossible Fallout
Eighth Grade
A Prayer Before Dawn
Blindspotting
Game Night
Leave No Trace
A Simple Favor
Worst movie of the year-Aquaman
These are not in any particular order
Steve, I liked EIGHTH GRADE and A QUIET PLACE, but would I want to see those movies again…not really. AQUAMAN floated to the top of this week’s BOX OFFICE list, but I think it will sink as word-of-mouth about its deficiencies spreads.
We haven’t been in months, though we have some saved (RBG) or waiting on Netflix (ROMA, BUSTER SCRUGGS) yet to watch. I do want to see the Mister Rogers movie and EIGHTH GRADE too.
Steve must have pretty good taste because four of my choices are on his list: First Reformed, Roma, Leave No Trace, and A Simple Favor. The last one pretty much falls apart at the end, but I have a soft spot for movies that start out as one thing and morph into something else. I’ll add two more Netflix movies–The Land of Steady Habits and Private Life. Then there’s the stunning HBO original The Tale. Also, The Death of Stalin and the year’s best horror movie, Hereditary. Finally, two stunning documentaries : the paean to Fred Rogers, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor”, and the absolutely unclassifiable Three Identical Strangers. I should mention that I haven’t yet seen any of the year end Oscar bait movies.
And while I’m here I can’t help mentioning a classic from 1957, Martin Ritt’s stunning look at post-war suburbia, No Down Payment. I’d heard of it but hadn’t seen it until TCM rescued it from oblivion last summer.
Michael, I’m always impressed by Steve’s taste in movies and books. Like you, I was found WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR very moving. I’ll have to watch Martin Ritt’s NO DOWN PAYMENT after your strong recommendation!
George, I saw quite a few films this year, mostly on Netflix. However, I’ll have to go back to recollect the ones I did. On Christmas Day, I watched Sandra Bullock’s supernatural thriller BIRD BOX (also on Netflix) and liked it a lot. Stephen King described it as “Riveting” and I agree with him.
George, many viewers online have compared BIRD BOX with A QUIET PLACE, which I have not seen. But there are others who don’t agree with the comparison because, I believe, A QUIET PLACE has real creatures while BIRD BOX has unseen entities.
This was not a big year at the movies for me. But I saw a ton of good stuff on cable – including RBG. I am currently following three British crime shows: LINE OF DUTY, BROADCHURCH, and HAPPY VALLEY.

Jeff, 2018 was a huge year for documentaries. The Mister Rogers film had us crying. RBG and the Whiney Houston documentaries moved us, too.
I will do a list next week. Need to see a few others first.
Patti, we have RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET and ON THE BASIS OF SEX on our SEE REAL SOON list.

I liked Hereditary also. Three Identical Strangers is coming to CNN ( I think) in January.
Steve, I’ll have to catch THREE IDENTICAL STRANGERS on CNN in January. It opened and closed here in a week and we missed it.

I didn’t see any, busy reading books and working in the garden.
I forgot about July 22. Should have been on my list.
My faves were reruns of Dragnet, the Three Stooges, and Amos ‘n’ Andy on YouTube! I certainly wouldn’t waste my money on The Smirking Dwarf!!!
Bob, what would we do without YouTube?

Prashant, I’ve seen a trailer of BIRD BOX that reminded me of A QUIET PLACE. I’ll have to check it out.

Prashant, I recommend A QUIET PLACE. The audience I saw it with scarcely made a sound during the whole movie!

Elgin, we enjoy BBC America and all the ACORN series.
