FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF [Blu-ray]

ferris bueller's day off
TARGET sells Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for a mere $5 for the Blu-ray version. That’s a bargain in my book! Back in 1986, this John Hughes movie had a tremendous impact on a whole generation. Matthew Broderick found stardom in this film. Special features include: Getting the Class Together, The Cast of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off; The Making of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off; Who Is Ferris Bueller?; The World According to Ben Stein; Vintage Ferris Bueller; The Lost Tapes; and Class Album. If you haven’t seen Ferris Bueller’s Day Off you’re in for a treat when you do. GRADE: A

I loved this movie when I first saw it. Even though I was 28 and no longer full of teenage dreams, its peppy optimism was infectious. I haven’t seen it in years and now, having teenagers of my own, I might not look so fondly on the “antics” of faking being sick to get out of school or taking Dad’s classic car for a spin. Still, as a late-eighties time capsule, it’s fabulous.

One last comment: when you see how Charlie Sheen almost steals the show in one very brief scene he’s in, you can really understand how he has wrecked his life and talent in the intervening decades.

Deb, you’re spot on with your time capsule remark. FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF captures the spirit of the 1980s. And it also shows Charlie Sheen’s talent…and flaws.

I was too old to really liked it even then (the smug smirkiness was annoying) and I don’t think it – or Matthew Broderick for that matter – has aged very well. John Hughes was huge in his time but that time is not now.

Jeff, you’re right about John Hughes capturing the Spirit of that time. These Hughes movies aren’t Timeless like STAR WARS but I admire his ability to show how youth of that time operated.

My youngest sister is a huge fan of SIXTEEN CANDLES, and Jackie’s sister loves THE BREAKFAST CLUB.

Jeff, SIXTEEN CANDLES might be my favorite John Hughes movie (I haven’t seen it in a decade!). THE BREAKFAST CLUB holds a special place in the hearts of teenagers who first saw it. It was ground-breaking for its time.

I think Jeff’ called it for me too. There’s a smugness that irks me. Though he did capture a certain kind of kid with it,

I didn’t see it when it first came out, but when I finally saw it, I enjoyed it. At the time I first saw it, Charlie Sheen didn’t register, though his character did. I saw it for the second time much later, and was surprised Sheen was in it. I agree with how he’s wasted his talent with his excesses. I last saw Ferris about 3 years ago, and still enjoyed it. I remember especially liking the parade scene.
