The Chalice of Death: Three Novels of Mystery in Space is the third omnibus collection from Planet Stories. All three novels in this collection were published as halves of ACE Doubles. The Chalice of Death was first published as Lest We Forget Thee, Earth under the psuedonym “Calvin M. Knox.” Shadow on the Stars was originally published as Stepsons of Terra. Starhaven was published under the pseudonym of “Ivar Jorgenson.” I’ve enjoyed the two previous omnibus collections, Hunt the Space-Witch! and The Planet Killers. If you’re a friend of fan of Robert Silverberg, you’ll find these long unavailable novels fun reading.
Read these long, long ago. Great stuff.
I read them decades ago, too, Bill. It’s great to have these pulpish SF stories back in such a nice, affordable package.
Great to hear about these early works being republished George as as I’ve not read either of them. Are they SF-mystery hybrids, or is that merely canny two-for-one cover blurb? This morning I bought a second-hand copy of Silverberg’s 1971 Nebula-winning novel “A Time of Changes” – must be a sign!
The three novels in this omnibus edition are SF with mystery elements, Sergio. I’ve enjoyed all of these early Silverberg works. Planet Stories has packaged these wonderful stories in an attractive format.
Nice. Planet Stories continues to do a nice job with it’s fantasy/SF offerings.
Planet Stories can mine plenty of SF from the Sixties and Seventies, Rick. I’ll buy whatever they publish.
I’ve got all three of the Ace editions somewhere. Didn’t they have great covers? I miss those old covers, they created a real sense of wonder. The reprint cover is just boring.
I had all those great ACE Doubles with the cool covers, too, Stan. But they now reside at SUNY at Buffalo. It’s nice to have these Silverberg novels in a nice format. I’m a big fan of Planet Stories!
I’m not as fond of this cover of the Planet Stories edition as I am of Hunt the Space-Witch. Love the other covers for these stories you posted. Wow! I am interested in picking this up and reading it though after being so thrilled with Hunt.
You can’t go wrong with early Silverberg, Carl! I’ve enjoy all of the Planet Stories omnibus editions.
