FORGOTTEN MUSIC #23: Too Much to Dream – Original Group Recordings: Reprise 1966-1967 By The Electric Prunes

Listeners of a certain age will certainly remember the buzzing introduction of “I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night.” The Electric Prunes only had a couple of hits, but those songs somehow stay in the memory bank despite the years. The Electric Prunes other hit, “Get Me To the World On Time,” which also possesses an infectious, hippy-dippy charm. This 2-CD collection brings together all the essential music of The Electric Prunes. If you want a walk down Memory Lane, this is the collection that will guide you there.

I love “Too Much to Dream.” During my teens, one of my prized possessions was a copy of the “I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night” LP (along with the first Jefferson Airplane album–the one with Signe Anderson and not Grace Slick), which my Dad had found in an old house he was helping to renovate and brought home to me rather than throw in the dumpster. Both albums were in excellent condition–and this was the mid-1970s–so I wonder who owned them and why they were in an abandoned house a decade after release.

Alas, both LPs, along with all the rest of my vinyl, are long gone–donated to the Goodwill to make room in our house. But thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I hang out on Memory Lane a lot, Deb. Yes, The Electric Prunes and the Jefferson Airplane shared the same musical era although the Airplane (later Starship) lasted a lot longer. Curious story about those LPs in that abandoned house. That sounds like something Patti could turn into a short story.

I must admit that “I Had Too Much to Dream” is the only song of theirs I remember at all. That was a real trip (accurate word!) down memory lane.

Now the Airplane is another story. I remember going to see them in a very, very long concert (there was a Hot Tuna set in there somewhere) when Grace Slick was heavily pregnant – which would make it late in 1970. Someone tossed her a teddy bear for the baby and she, gracious as ever, fired it back at him.

I had a giant crush on Grace Slick back in the Sixties, Jeff. Later, I learned she could be “moody.” That cooled my ardor.

I remember that Grace Slick left the Jefferson Starship, then came back a few years later, Jeff. I remember one of their later LPs stating “Introducing Grace Slick” as a joke.

The Electric Prunes are still one of my fsvorite groups along with the Airplane. I have all their records and converted the two classical/religious albums into a CD years ago. Also have some DVDs of their TV work. Thanks, George, for bringing them up today.

Man, I saw them years ago along with Moby Grape and The Peanut Butter Conspiracy (not at the same time), and more mainstream groups like Airplane and Big Brother and Blue Cheer. When I was at SC in the late 60s every weekend they had a concert at the Shrine Auditorium (it was very seedy in those days) which was about 8 blocks up the street. Janis Joplin was awesome in person, The Moody Blues were awful (they were a studio band) but Cream (in those days they were Fresh Cream) was just amazing. B B King and his signing guitar, and lots of groups whose name I can’t remember . . .

    Great days!

Glad this Electric Prunes posting took you down Memory Lane, Stan! I would have loved to Janis Joplin live! I did see Cream when they performed in Milwaukee in the late Sixties. Amazing is right!

I had the first album and nearly played the grooves off it. Only about four songs I really, really liked, but I tolerated the rest to hear those over and over. The second album wasn’t as good.

I had Jefferson Airplane’s Surrealistic Pillow album, and played that on into the ground as well, especially loving ‘White Rabbit” and “3/5 of a Mile”. I have it on CD now.

Stan – Man, I went to the Shrine a bunch back then too! I also saw Electric Prunes there, and Moby Grape, as well as CTA (later Chicago), Love and others. Yep, it was seedy then, but had a certain charm, and the air was perfumed… Good, good times.
