FORGOTTEN MUSIC #35: RUMOURS (35TH ANNIVERSARY SUPER DELUXE EDITION, 4 CDS & 1 DVD & 1 LP BOX SET) By Fleetwood Mac

Rumours made Fleetwood Mac one of the most iconic bands of the 1970s. The original album won the Grammy® for “Album of the Year.” Rumours has sold 40 million copies worldwide since its 1977 debut. I bought the original LP and played it until the grooves wore out. Fleetwood Mac never produced anything close to this in their long career. This new box set features alternative versions of the songs. And there’s a CD full of music from their 1977 tour that’s well worth listening to. And, of course, this new re-mastered edition sounds superb! Highly recommended!

Somehow I missed a lot of this era of music. Very few of these songs are familiar to me. I must have been listening to something…what?

Great stuff! I wore out the vinyl on rhis one: you can go your own way…

Fleetwood Mac, minus Christine McVie, will be at Jazz Fest in New Orleans, my husband and two youngest daughters (one if whom is a percussionist who loves Mick Fleetwood) have already budgeted money for their tickets.

Deb, I’ve seen Fleetwood Mac in concert twice. But that was decades ago. I don’t know what the current group is going to sound like.

Deb, some advice (you probably don’t need it but just in case): judging by our experience last year if you (or they) want to see Fleetwood Mac make sure to get there as soon after the gates open as possible and stake out chair space immediately. You can leave and return as long as you have your spot. Jackie missed out on seeing The Eagles last year because we got there too late – and by “too late” I mean several hours before they were scheduled to go on. The last couple of years Jazzfest has been impossibly crowded,

I’ll pass on your recommendations to my husband and kids, Jeff. They’ve done Jazz Fest several times, but I don’t think they’ve ever wanted to see an act as popular as FM undoubtedly will be. They can go broil in the sun, Mom will be home in the air conditioning listening to Rumours on CD!

Good idea! Sitting out there hour after hour (another thought: bring a chair with an umbrella attachment, which we never do) gets pretty hard to take after a while. My favorite way to cool off: frozen iced coffee from Cafe du Monde.

As for RUMOURS, I too wore out my copy and have since replaced it with a CD. We never saw them perform in their heyday but did get to see them a couple of years ago at Madison Square Garden. Of course I was disappointed not to get to see the great Christine McVie but otherwise they sounded god and did a very good show.

Of course the previous Fleetwood Mac album (“Fleetwood Mac”), the first with Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham, was also good and included classic Christine McVie songs like “Say You Love Me” and “Over My Head” as well as “Rhiannon” and the much-covered “Landslide” by Nicks.

If you’re wondering (I was) they do the Christine McVie songs, usually sung by Nicks or Nicks & Buckingham together.

I remember first hearing “Dreams” on a car radio during a typically tense, unpleasant family roadtrip down to visit relatives. I was unusually forceful in discouraging my father from turning the radio off at that point.

Todd, I too have a vivid memory of the first time I heard “Dreams.” But, since this is a family blog, I’ll have to leave the details to your imagination.

This was the best of the Buckingham/Nicks Fleetwood Mac but I always preferred the Peter Green led Fleetwood Mac-with such great songs as Albatross, Oh Well, Black Magic Woman,Green Manalishi, etc. Albatross is one of the most beautiful instrumentals around.

I first saw them live at the Bath Blues Festival in Britain in 1969. At that time there were no female members of the group – though one was in another group called Chicken Shack that played at the same festival. I recently found the program for this while hunting for something else, and on it I had marked the bands I liked. At that time I had heard of none of them – but those two got top marks along with another – Led Zeppelin, who were amazing. Hell of a day sitting in an open field in sunshine (about the only sunny day in the month I was in Britain). Oh, and I also attended the Rolling Stones free concert in Hyde Park a few days before this.

Of course a bunch of you were probably at Woodstock that summer.

Rumours is easily one of my favorite albums of all time. I grew up listening to Fleetwood Mac and their sound, in my mind, has withstood the test of time in ways that not many groups can say decades later. They were, are, so incredibly talented and their music remains unique. Love ’em!

I forgot that I saw them live at the Oakland Colliseum in 1976. It was my first big date with my first wife. They were great. I think the opening act was Gary Wright–the guy with the black box schtik, whatever his name is. We heard that Santana played as a surprise act at the end, but we left after FM. It was a long day sitting in those hot bleachers.

I saw Fleetwood Mac in 1976, too, Bob. And, as you say, they were great back then. The later concert, sometime in the 1980s, wasn’t as good.

Wow, Stan – impressive. No I wasn’t at Woodstock but my brother Ken was, as well as at the Concert for Bangla Desh in Madison Square Garden in 1971.

Of course, I did see The Beatles at Carnegie Hall on their first trip to America in February 1964.
