FORGOTTEN MUSIC #36: CARRY ON By Stephen Stills [4-CD Box Set]

Stephen Stills has had a long and successful career. Stills was part of the groups Buffalo Springfield, Manassas and CSNY with David Crosby, Graham Nash and Neil Young (I always thought Crosby Stills Nash & Young sounded like a law firm). On this just released four-CD set, the entire 50-year scope of Stills’ career is represented with 82 tracks (25 of them previously unreleased). If you only know Stephen Stills from “Love The One You’re With” or “Southern Cross” you’ll find plenty of other great songs by this gifted artist in this box-set. You could also buy this box-set because it also contains the best of Buffalo Springfield and CSNY. The remastered sound is great!

It sounds really good…which, sadly, one can no longer say about Stills himself. We’ve seen him a number of times in the last ten years, with Crosby & Nash (and once Young) and his voice is no longer the same.

Not everyone is a Tony Bennett, who sounds as good at 85 as he did when decades younger. I guess we still have the old stuff.

Aside: Jimmy Buffett has made “Southern Cross” a regular part of his concerts.

Yes, Jeff, Stephen Stills’ voice is shot now. But, way back when, it was pretty good. This 50 year retrospective 4-CD box set captures the best of his work.

Oh that is so going on my Mother’s Day wish list. (Honey, forget the Bed, Bath, and Beyond gift card, here’s what I want.) I know his voice isn’t what it once was and that his current wife is ten years my junior, but he’ll always be Stephen “Helplessly Hoping” Stills to me!

Sounds terrific. I’ve damn near worn out the CDs (is that possible?) of Buffalo Springfield, CSN and CSNY. I can’t figure the order they decided to use on this, but I guess it doesn’t matter. I’m going to have to buy it.

Rick, I’m going to have to send you a BUDGETS ARE FOR WIMPS mug. I sent one to Art Scott years ago. You’re going to love the music on CARRY ON!

Jackie definitely subscribes to the Budgets Are for Wimps theory. I can’t remember where we first heard the term but as long as we have “DI” (Discretionary Income) why not use it? That’s what it’s for, right?

Another “Helplessly Hoping” fan here. My own voice went the way of Stills’s, so I sympathize. Not that it was as good as his to start with, of course.

My band predated CSNY by several years and a few light years of talent, except for the lead guitarist. He was a prodigy.
