FORGOTTEN MUSIC #52: #1 TO INFINITY By Mariah Carey

Who has the most Number One hits? No, not the Beatles. Not the Rolling Stones. Not Michel Jackson. It’s Mariah Carey. And all of her Number One songs are on this new CD. I feel sorry of Mariah Carey. She tried to transition from pop music diva to a movie star. But her movie, Glitter, opened the weekend after 9/11 and bombed. Mariah Carey’s career never recovered. Today, Mariah Carey is a marginalized artist who shows up on other rappers’ songs. But in the late 1980s and 1990s Carey was a hit machine. What’s your favorite Mariah Carey song?

She’s pretty and has good pipes but I don’t listen to her. I’m not a fan of pop stylings.

George, over a thousand have died in the current heat wave across India. We are better off in coastal Mumbai where the temp is over 90F and the humidity that’s killing. Fortunately, we don’t have power cuts as in many parts of the country. We are now bracing for rains, which while cooling, brings its own share of problems like floods.

Prashant, global warming is causing flooding Texas and Oklahoma over here. The whole world is heating up too fast!

I suddenly realized that the only Mariah Carey song I know is “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and I only know that because they play the heck out of it from Thanksgiving until December 25!

What Deb said. I know the “Christmas” song from LOVE ACTUALLY. Otherwise, I don’t listen to her. Now Whitney was a whole different story. Jackie used to listen to her first album every day.

    What a waste.

I have always assumed she just sang the songs given her, with the arrangements given her, much like 60 and 70s pop artists. She wasn’t a songwriter or musician herself, was she? I was going to say I have no favorite of her songs, wouldn’t know one if I heard it, but I have heard that Christmas one, because yes, it’s overplayed at the holidays.

Rick, Mariah Carey’s music was playing in every mall in America during the 1990s. You might have heard some of these songs as background music. Today, she’s almost forgotten.
