FORGOTTEN MUSIC #61: BORN TO BE TOGETHER: THE SONGS OF BARRY MANN & CYNTHIA WEIL

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical delighted me. I’m a big fan of Jerry Goffin and Carole King’s music. I play their compilation CD frequently. Check it out here. The other song writing team in Beautiful that competed with Goffin and King at the Brill Building was Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. I knew they wrote “I Lost That Lovin’ Feelin'” for The Righteous Brothers, but I had no idea how many great songs they produced until I bought Born to Be Together. This CD collects some memorable hits! Who can forget “We’ve Gotta Get Out of This Place” by The Animals? Classic! Do you have a favorite Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil song?

I was leaning towards the Johnny Crawford song but I guess I’d pick You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling as my fab fave from that list!

By the way, who put the bomp?

Cap’n Bob beat me to it. Mann & Weil are the only one of the three great songwriting couples of that era (the third was Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich) who remained married to each other.

Great songs. I don’t have one favorite, but do like “Uptown” and “On Broadway” (especially the George Benson version).

For completist reasons (George already listed the King-Goffin songs last time), here are some Ellie Greenwich-Jeff Barry collaborations (some with Phil Spector):

    Da Doo Ron Ron
    Be My Baby
    Then He Kissed Me
The Kind of Boy You Can’t Forget
    Hanky Panky
    Baby, I Love You
    Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)
    Do Wah Diddy Diddy
    Chapel of Love
I Wanna Love Him So Bad
    Leader of the Pack
    Maybe I Know
    River Deep – Mountain High

And Jeff Barry co-wrote the classic Tell Laura I Love Her.

A lot of my personal favorites are on this list.

On this list, River Deep Mountain High, Chapel of Love, Christmas (Darlene Love every year on Letterman), Be My Baby are the tops for me

If co-writing with crazy Phil Spector is allowed, then my all time favourite of course is
    River deep, mountain high!
Like all th fantastic songs of that area it has its own wiki entry of course:

I was a student from 1962 to 1969 (yes, that was way too long …) and in the later days had a room where you could play the music really loud without disturbing anyone (upstairs of a bar …) soall my friends gathered there …
    Those were the days!

My 2 favs are You Baby and Make your own kind of music. Many of these I’m not familiar with, at least by name.
