FORGOTTEN MUSIC #68: THE MOTOWN ANTHOLOGY: KIM WESTON [2-CD SET]

Kim Weston had a successful career with Motown Records, but never had the break-out hit that would have made her a star. To me, Kim Weston’s voice sounds as good as Diana Ross’s. I stumbled over this 2-CD set (less than $9 on AMAZON!) and have played it several times. It’s vintage Motown soul music. There are hours of great listening ahead of you if you pick up this set. Great music at a great price! Listen to “Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)” below to revisit the Sixties. GRADE: A-

Thanks, George. I would have thought I’d not heard of her, but I had heard the song you highlighted, Take me in your arms. I remember really liking it.

Maggie, Kim Weston needed a string of hits like “Take Me In Your Arms” to reach stardom. She didn’t quite get there, but I think she’s a wonderful singer.

Jeff, Kim Weston had a lot of talent. And these songs, with the Motown sound, sound fabulous to me. Almost 50 songs for less than $9! Bargain time!

    Thanks!
“It Takes Two” with Marvin Gaye I still remember, it used to be one of my favourite love songs. Motown had a lot of good performers.

Wolf, Motown was a hit song factory. They had dozens of singers and groups recording all the time. Kim Weston never made the Big Time, but I love her music.

If someone wanted to get started collecting Motown, is there an anthology or two that people would recommend? I grew up with Motown, as did everyone in my generation (born 52) but I have no Motown music other than an old CD of the Four Tops. Thanks.

I’ve seen a show on pbs, I think, Motown at 25 so if that anniversary show is available it might be worth checking out

Thanks for the suggestions. On a slightly different note, I just finished a fine book on Memphis soul–Robert Gordon, Respect Yourself: Stax Records and the Soul Explosion. Which means I need some Stax music to go along with the Motown I’ll be ordering. Which means I will be broke.

Joe, I’ve read RESPECT YOURSELF. Great stuff as are the STAX music anthologies. Just think of yourself as a patriot as you stimulate the U.S. economy with your purchases!
