FORGOTTEN MUSIC #8: HIT MAN By David Foster & Friends [Blu-ray]

Mention David Foster to most people and you’ll get a blank look and a comment like, “Who’s David Foster? I never heard of him.” David Foster has won 15 Grammys, worked with Barbra Striesand, Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire, and dozens of other artists. He’s written Number One songs, wrote the soundtrack to St. Elmo’s Fire, produced and arranged dozens of hits. Now we have the best of David Foster on this great DVD in wonderful sound. Held in Las Vegas, Foster brought together a bevy of singers to present his best songs to an enthusiastic audience. Glance at the play list and you’ll find plenty of songs you’re familiar with. Foster’s 40-year career as the guy behind the scenes produced some great music. Not bad for a guy most people have never heard of. You might see this concert broadcast on PBS during some fund-raiser.

Paul Simon did write it, Patti. Foster had nothing whatever to do with it. He sang it at a Haiti fundraiser this year.

I’ve heard of him, Bill, but I don’t care for a lot of the people he produces. Some of them are on that list.

We’re seeing Boz Scaggs next Friday in a concert with Donald Fagen and Michael McDonald called “The Dukes of September” – can’t wait!

  3. Drongo

George, I thought that bit about the Canadians was funny, but now I’m thinking you might not have been making a joke.

The Canadians regard David Foster as one of their top icons, Drongo. He played a huge role in producing Canadian artists and launching their careers in the U.S.

Steely Dan has never played in Western New York, Rick. The closest they come is Toronto. If there’s a DUKES OF SEPTEMBER CD, I’ll be happy to rip you a copy.

We’ve seen Scaggs twice, McDonald and Fagen several times each (including together; McDonald played and recorded with Steely Dan before going to the Doobie Brothers). Often on these New York-area concerts they have Phoebe Snow as a ‘special guest’ so we’re hoping. She was on that New York Rock & Soul Revue CD.

Rick, just got my copy of QUARTER SHARE; paid $8.60 from amazon.

    Looks good.

I’m hoping for a CD/DVD set of THE DUKES OF SEPTEMBER, Jeff. Right about in time for Christmas. Love Boz Scaggs and Michael McDonald. And, of course, I have all the Steely Dan CDs.

Kenny G, Josh Groban, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion. Reads like a list of everyone I can’t stand. Foster is the king of Dentist Office muzak.

George, thanks for recommending that Steve Winwood collection. I got it today and I’m listening to it now. Great stuff!

Steve Winwood’s REVOLUTIONS is terrific, Jeff. From the Spenser Davis Group to Traffic to Blind Faith to his solo work, this collection has it all.
