NEW FRIGIDAIRE REFRIGERATOR

After the new Frigidaire range, Frigidaire microwave, and Bosch dishwasher arrived, Diane started giving our 22-year-old General Electric refrigerator some hard looks. The GE fridge was still working, no real problems, but Diane decided she wanted a new Fridgaire refrigerator to go with the new range and microwave. Like the other new appliances that we’re getting used to, the new refrigerator is a lot more quiet than the unit it replaced. The installers told us that this new Frigidaire refrigerator should use less power than our old GE fridge. Are you happy with your refrigerator?

    Congrat!
    Looks good, but …
Is’t this too small for you? 🙂
On my visits to families in the USA I’ve always seen gigantic machines – “I think “side by side” is the expression, which also make ice cubes.
    PS:
They are sold now in Europe too – but they cost upwards of 2000€ and they use much more electricity.
We have relatively small fridges with even smaller space for frozen stuff and ice cream – but an additional freezer in some cooler location like the cellar.
My wife says that’s also good for me – she sends me down several times a day, kind of sports activity … 🙂

Wolf, we have two refrigerators: one in the kitchen (the new Frigidaire) and a larger refrigerator (with freezer) down in our basement.

Mine has problems. Frequently runs out of what I’m hungry for, yet harbors foods old enough to attend College. Went through it last week and threw out EVERYTHING with an out-date before 2000, but it hasn’t helped.

Dan, Diane “purges” our refrigerator every Sunday night before I put out the garbage. That way, nothing “old” festers in the fridge. We try to stay current on food, only buying what we plan to eat that week.

Nice! Way to stimulate the economy and beat the coming recession. Ours still works well.

Wolf. you’re right, there are a lot of those out there, but I have never liked a side-by-side machine. And if I want ice, I don’t mind opening the freezer and taking out a couple of cubes. I don’t need it in the door.

Jeff, great minds think alike. We alway buy the basic fridge. No ice makers, no computer link, no running water. And, like you, I’ve never been a fan of the “side-by side” doors on fridges. Plus we only have a narrow space in the kitchen for a refrigerator so many of the exotic “features” aren’t available on a 28″X65″X31″ model…which is fine me.

Ours is a Kenmore purchased post-Katrina. It does the job (and does have an ice-maker, but not in the door). It’s working, so I don’t think we’ll be in the market for a new one anytime soon.

Deb, we have friends who love Kenmore appliances. We used to favor GE but they sold their appliance division to the European company, Haier. Haier also bought the rights to use the GE name on the appliances until 2056.

George, Haier is a Chinese company …
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haier
They built their first fridges in cooperation with and on ideas from Swiss/German company Liebherr (which still has a good name) and expanded over the last years so they are now the biggest world wide!
“In January, 2016 Haier Group acquired General Electric’s appliance division for $5.4 billion.[15]
On sept 28, 2018 was announced that Haier acquired the Hoover Candy group.”
        Seems a fantastic success story!

The refrigerator that came with apartment is 39 years old and creaking. It uses the same amount of electricity as a small city. We recently bought a mini-fridge that seems to be working out well — less food waste and we’re much more aware of what we have. The old fridge is going out on the back porch as soon as I take the doors off.

We have a four-year-old LG counter depth, stainless, with ice and water in the door. We don’t use the water much, but we use the ice frequently. I think it’s a little noisy, but Barbara doesn’t mind at all.

Rick, like Jeff I just use the ice cubes from the trays. All of new appliances are extremely quiet. I didn’t notice that the old appliances had gotten loud until the new ones arrived. What a difference!

My basic no-frills model Frigidaire arrived about 4 years ago, gratis, from PG&E’s energy saving program (when you’re old and book poor, you’ve gotta Work The System). It works fine and is all I need. My mother passed on paranoia about food spoilage; leftovers get no more than 3 days – eat or toss. On the other hand, I dine royally on choice steaks from the Manager’s Special bin: 30% day before Sell By date, 50% off on Sell By date. Just so long as I cook or freeze immediately.

Art, Diane doesn’t allow food to linger in the fridge. Usually, I eat a left-over within a couple days. Diane will freeze some foods to extend their life. So far, we like our new no-frills Frigidaire. I think you should start buying POWERBALL tickets to cure that “book poor” problem!

Same here – I don’t mind eating the same dish two or three days in a row,
We often freeze stuff because there are many Hungarian (and German) dishes which you can cook only in a large pot – like a goulash or a bean soup or …
And also we have stuff in the garden – or get it from our neighbours in large amount.
Right now we got six giant zucchini …
        PS:
Is courgette really the english name for zucchini?
My new favourite is rooster goulash, but a four pounds rooster of course makes at least 10 portions – so there’s a lot to freeze …

You have to be careful there with “good until …” dates! Some products have no problem, with others like meat, sausage or vegetables you might see them spoiled even before that date. So I let my wife decide …
      PS and rather OT:
When I went shopping in a US supermarket for the first time I was astonished to see that eggs should be kept in the fridge!
Now I know that’s necessary because they’re washed – here in Europe we don’t wash eggs and they can be kept several weeks in a cool place (of course not in the sun) because they have a natural barrier on the shell against microbes etc.

The best steak I ever ate was one of Art’s Manager’s Specials when I visited him a few years back (which is anywhere from three to six years with my sketchy memory)! Our fridge is too loud and since we have an open floor plan from kitchen to living room it’s a pain in the ass! When I stay up late to watch TV I have to constantly adjust the sound! The furnace/cooler is also loud! The fridge is a basic model; it doesn’t make ice cubes or dispense cold water, although either would be nice!

I bought a few models yesterday, by the way! Maybe I should make a blog post about it!

Bob, I’m always impressed by your model expertise! All of our old appliances were noisy. The new appliances are quiet. The BOSCH dishwasher is so quiet the machine has a laser light to show you that it’s on! It’s super-quiet!

I have a small Danby in my small kitchen that was new a couple of years ago. The previous one had lasted forever and was still running when I had to replace my stove and decided to go for both. I have a larger one with a bigger freezer in my basment for overflow. It’s more than 40 years old and I have never had a problem. For years beer took up plenty of the space, but not any longer. The parties in the basement with my hockey and softball buddies drinking beer and playing my Rockola juke box are just a memory.

Kent, our fridge in the basement holds most of our wine (I prefer my wine cold). The freezer is full of ice cream and Cool Whip.
