GLAD RAG DOLL By Diana Krall

I’m a mild fan of Diana Krull’s work. But, increasingly, the packaging of a Diana Krall CD seems to have taken priority over the music. Glad Rag Doll reveals this marketing strategy clearly. Here’s Diana Krall in a sexy outfit on the cover. If the music on the CD was as hot as this cover, I’d be recommending it. After listening to the entire CD a couple of times, I like only “Wide River to Cross.” The rest of the songs don’t stir me a bit. GRADE: C

Oh dear–I hadn’t seen that cover before now, but I haven’t bought one of her albums for years, and you’re right she was being sexed up for her covers before this one (although this seems a lot less subtle than, say, “The Look of Love,” where she’s wearing a black mini skirt and high heels, but is sitting staring into space). Despite all the attempts made to present her as sexy, her singing always comes across as bland and one-dimensional to me. Give me an d Julie London record any day.

You and I have exactly the same reaction to Diana Krall, Deb! Nowhere near the talent of Julie London. But the marketing strategy seems to be to sexy her up on the CD covers.

I loved her early albums, especially when she was doing a lot of classics. But as time went on the singing and song selection became less interesting. Bah! I stopped buying her stuff many years ago. She’s still a fine piano player, but that song you put here is pure country. I don’t like the cover and don’t see any way to justify it.

Diana Krall seems to be branching out into other musical genres, Rick. “Wide River to Cross” was the only song that appealed to me on this CD.
