GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK [CNN]

Diane and I saw the movie version of Good Night, and Good Luck back in 2005. We enjoyed the drama of the Press going after a demagogue like Senator McCarthy. We’re looking forward to seeing this stage version tonight at 7:00 ET on CNN.

Good Night, and Good Luck is a historical drama play written by George Clooney and Grant Heslov. It is adapted from their 2005 film Good Night, and Good Luck and focuses on the conflict between veteran CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow and U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy. The play’s Broadway premiere in March 2025, directed by David Cromer, stars Clooney as Murrow, making his Broadway debut.

The play has enjoyed strong box office grosses, setting the historical Broadway weekly record. For the week ending May 4, 2025, the play’s gross of $4,003,481.50, made it the first Broadway play to surpass $4 million in a week.” That number doesn’t seem surprising with tickets to Good Night, and Good Luck going for over $1000. Will you be watching Good Night, and Good Luck tonight?

Maybe we’ll record it. Saturday night is our Brit Night. Everyone we know who has seen it was underwhelmed. They said it was good, but the movie was better. Still, in this return to McCarthyism we’re living through, it doesn’t hurt to remind people.

Jeff, we’ve heard the same thing: the movie version of GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK is superior to the Broadway version. But, we’ll watch this tonight.

Even given Clooney’s own doubts about how he himself would be ill-suited (and certainly ill-perceived) for the role in the film, David Strathairn was simply a better choice for the role in several ways. I’ll probably watch it tonight, and I expect CNN might be generous with streaming, unless it’s a one-and-done to not cut into the Bway gravy train. There are very few to no single performances I will pay a grand to experience, particularly with the prospect of sneezers and such in my immediate vicinity.

Todd, I enjoyed the movie version of GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK nearly 20 years ago. Diane and I did not consider seeing this play version when we visited NYC last month. Like you, I’m not likely to spend $1000 for any ticket other than one for a plane. This live performance should have a SNL feel to it tonight.

Recording it at a friend’s house. I don’t have CNN. I expect to see a diminished Clooney.

Ah. Well, that might well mean one can stream it from CNN for some time. I have enjoyed re-watching HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU (US)’s first two seasons’ episodes on CNN streaming of late, as well as catching the BBC well of UK episodes. Excellent dishwashing distraction (don’t buy a Miele dishwasher).
