The weather that’s been drenching Texas is heading our way today with torrential rains, flash flooding, and possible tornado-force winds, so trick-or-treating is probably going to be a no-go tonight. Some communities went ahead with trick-or-treat last night, but–being a community with four public and one Catholic high schools in a ten-mile radius–it was a pretty paltry affair because half the population ( including yours truly) was in the football stands under the Friday night lights.
On the other hand, our front door got egged (we think we know the perpetrators), so t-and-t was alive and well!
Deb, I hope all that rain misses you! We got a little taste of the remnants of Hurricane Patricia a couple days ago: 3 inches of rain and then a day of High Winds. Not fun.
We moved to Brooklyn when I was 10 and my brother was 9. We were two short blocks from the local public school and went there often after school to play stickball in the schoolyard. On Halloween I was walking home when some older kids rode by on bikes and one smashed an egg on my head.
Like George, we had a day of rain (not as much as he did) and wind, but today is sunny and supposed to be 56 – just a few days below the normal average high. I wonder if everyone will be out on Third Avenue this year as usual to collect goodies at the stores and restaurants since this is a Saturday and there is no school.
We’re supposed to get several days of around 70 degrees this week, which is nice.
Prashant, I suspect my daughter will be attending a Halloween party in Boston and my son will be partying in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I’ll just be handing out candy to little kids tonight.
George, my information is filled in. You or Patrick must have fixed the glitch. THANKS! Happy Halloween. I thought all the dumb old pranks (egging, TPing, soaping windows, went out with the 70s. I’m sorry to hear such petty vandalism is still popular. It’s a lot of trouble and work for the home owners.
It’s raining here, very windy, and due to rain a lot harder – an inch or two – this afternoon and evening, so we expect no one at the door. Still, Barbara bought candy, a kind she likes (Mounds and Almond Joy) so if anyone does come, she can hand that out. I’ll be in a back room, reading a Wycliff novel.
We had 1 doorbell ring, two little neighbor girls with parents, all tightly wrapped in rain gear. I has been pouring all afternoon and is still going. Large bowl of fun size candy bars sitting here. Barbara says freeze them, I say toss them. bah.
Happy Halloween everybody!
Here in cold Hungary we had a max of 15 C, almost 60 Fahrenheit, but it’ll be around freezing tonight, so no young ones went out …
Btw I remember we did tricks in Germany as children on the night before May 1st – Halloween was almost unknown …
We would exchange the wooden garden doors of the neighbours – the wooden fences were only around a meter high, so the doors weren’t heavy …
My classmates’ ans my best work was moving our teacher’s small car, a Lloyd Alexander, between two large cans of asphalt so he couldn’t drive off on May 1st …
As I was reading this I heard kids outside and went downstairs to look (about 8:40). Four kids were at the door. Two other groups were scared away by my dog before we could answer the door.
Time to substitute Ex-Lax for mini Hershey bars. Thanks for reminding me.
The weather is pretty rotten here so I don’t expect to see any kids unless the few who live on our cul-de-sac venture forth.
Bob, our weather is cool–50s–but dry. We’ll see a 100 Trick-or-Treaters tonight, easy.
I may go out and soap some windows, maybe TP a tree or two…. but it’s just not the same now that there are no more outhouses to tip over.
Dan, good point.
Hey guys, don’t forget to stock up on shaving cream and cartons of eggs.
The old gags are still the best ones.
Jeff, we’ll have a lot of kids racing across our lawn tonight.
You’re looking devilishly good this year, George.
I heard you were handing out good grades instead of candy this year — but only to the good boys and girls.
Jerry, Good Grades have to be earned. I’m Old School in that respect.

It wasn’t me, Deb. Honest!

Rick, all the credit for fixing the WordPress glitch goes to Patrick. I’m fond of Mounds and Almond Joy, too!

Rick, I’m with Barbara: freeze them.
Rick, Barbara has excellent taste in candy. Mounds and Almond Joy are favorites here too. Jackie is the Mounds fan.
Where I live, I don’t dare open the door. But there really isn’t much activity.
Happy Halloween everybody!

Wolf, we’re enjoying mild weather here because of the El Nino effect. We may actually hit 70 degrees–very unusual for November in Western NY!

Rick: send me the candy.
