Hope you have something interesting planned for today, George.

It is disheartening to see the decline of unions, although much of can be laid to corruption and greed from within their ranks. I grew up in the Merrimack Valley of Massachusetts where Lowell’s “Mill Girls” and Lawrence’s “Blood and Roses” both left an indelible mark on workers’ rights. Wild-eyed liberal that I am, I still find it hard to accept that our nation has turned so far from its people and their well-being

Jerry, sadly the words of Gordon Gekko’s speech in WALL STREET–“Greed is Good”–trumps Sally Field’s UNION sign in NORMA RAE. And our world is poorer for it.

New York is still a union town – police, firefighters, teachers, sanitation workers only start the list. Whenever there is a non-union construction job, you will see members of the various craft unions show up with a giant inflatable RAT to protest.

Any big barbecue plans, George? Don’t know what we’ll eat, but the heat and humidity are back today, so it won’t be a heavy meal.

Jeff, the “Right-to-Work” states seem to be Red…and poor. The Union states tend to be blue and prosperous. We’re invited to a friend’s picnic, but showers are in today’s forecast so we might be eating inside his house. I’m guessing there will be the usual stuff: hotdogs, hamburgers, sausages, BBQ, salads, watermelon, and ice cream for dessert.

We’re going to have burgers and fries. For dessert with the lunch (which also comes with a drink), this place serves a quarter of a hot waffle with ice cream (vanilla or chocolate), whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Yum! Then we’ll go to Starbucks for iced coffee,

Jeff, I’d like to try that hot waffle with chocolate ice cream and whipped cream! I was just at our local Starbucks to buy a couple bags of Blonde coffee using up some Starbucks gift cards.

Happy day back at you, George. We’re having ribs, corn on the cob, cole slaw, iced tea (if it warms up this afternoon, it’s in the 60s now). Nice thing about ribs is we can eat one or a handful, depending on hunger and self-control.

Jackie was bemoaning the lack of a good barbecue place in the neighborhood, which has dozens of restaurants of all types and ethnicity, since the last one closed. I don’t feel like driving out of the neighborhood today.

      Your menu sounds perfect,

That sounds good. We have others, just not near us.

Jackie loved her chocolate ice cream and waffle. She gives me most of her whipped cream. I also choose vanilla over chocolate.

Have fun, everybody – but don’t overeat on this holiday! 🙂

    Re Wall St:
“Greed is Good” should maybe be “Greed is God” – at least for some people …
