Prashant, LABOR DAY in the States is officially “the End of Summer.” Most of the schools around here start the FALL SEMESTER tomorrow.

Prashant, here’s what Wikipedia has to say about why our Labor Day is the first Monday in September:

Labor Day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organized the first parade in New York City. After the Haymarket Massacre, which occurred in Chicago on May 4, 1886, U.S. President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair. Thus, in 1887, it was established as an official holiday in September to support the Labor Day that the Knights favored.

Bummer on school returning. Time to retire!

We had our traditional “Labor Day barbecue” (in a restaurant, of course) yesterday – rack of ribs, beans, sweet potato fries, corn muffins and biscuits.

    yum!

Jeff, Katie was home this weekend (for another wedding!) and Diane reenacted Thanksgiving for Katie (it’s her favorite meal of the year). Turkey, stuffing, cranberry salad, mashed potatoes, green beans, and biscuits. For dessert, chocolate chip cookies (Katie’s favorite) and tuxedo cake. Yum!

That girl glitters and sparkles. Could she be an angst-y vampire?

Enjoy the day. You should be sleeping of your end-of-summer Thanksgiving meal instead of organizing class materials.

Happy Labor Day,George. I note that of all the foods you and Jeff list, the green beans are the only thing I’m now allowed to eat. It’s a dull food world I live in. I will “celebrate” by working in the yard, I guess. For the big holiday meal, which once upon a time was a grilled feast, I’ll be having a 4 oz. ground beef patty, a hard boiled egg and sugar free Jello for dessert. The good news is the wether here broke and it’s going to be very pleasant today with a high of 76.

Rick, your hot, humid weather migrated to us! We’re in the mid-80s and the humidity is brutal. The A/C is laboring and I dumped out the water my basement dehumidifiers collected. It’s supposed to rain on me tomorrow as I drive to work!

That pleasant 76 has turned into 87 and still rising. The weather blew it again. The air is on, but thank goodness we’re not having your (and Jeff’s) humidity. I forgot to mention I get asparagus with that dinner tonight.

Like George, we’ve got the heat and humidity here big time. The highest temperature all summer was 91 but it could hit 92 tomorrow, the first day of school!
