Happy New Year to you and Diane and the kids. I don’t believe in making resolutions. Just try and be healthy and live a good life.

Jeff, Katie flew back to Boston to be with friends New Year’s Eve and Patrick is partying in Toronto. They share your philosophy. Happy New Year to you and Jackie!

Like Jeff. I don’t make resolutions, but you have inspired me this year, George, so I resolve that you lose some weight and that you don’t buy the same book twice…wow, it seems that resolutions are easy if you don’t make them for yourself!

The very best to you and Diane in 2016!

happy new year. I don’t make actual resolutions, but do want to continue my attempt to eat less sugar, and exercise more. Over the weekend, I’m hoping to get my dvr down to 30%. It’s at 54% now.

Believe it or not, since we switched to Verizon FIOS (unsolicited testimonial!) we have so much more room that we are never over 15% full. At the moment, Jackie has a bunch of ALIEN NATION made-for-TV movies and I have noir movies that TCM ran this summer. She watched or deleted all the Hallmark Christmas movies. With a total of 28 hours filled, we are at 5%!! This is good, because when we got home from Florida last year all the stuff we’d recorded while we were gone filled the DVR completely. We went from 200 hours to over 500. If FIOS ever comes to your areas, check it out!

Jeff, I’ll look into FIOS. Our new Time-Warner/Comcast DRV holds about 300 hours. Fortunately, most of the programs we watch are on hiatus so we plan to chip away at the dozens of TV shows we’ve recorded.

Before I went to Bouchercon, I got the DVR down to about 15%. It killed me to delete some of the SNL’s I had on tape, the Graham Norton Shows, and the Jimmy Kimmel live, where Matt Damon took over the show. When I got back, I was up to about 80%. I have some movies that I’m watching a bit at a time. They don’t hold my interest enough to watch all at once, so I whittle away at them as I do want to see them. I also have the last kingdom on BBCA, which I haven’t been in the mood to watch.

What I’m now having trouble letting go is Ryan Gosling on SNL, (he got blasted by critics for laughing during the skits, but the other cast members were cracking up, especially at the alien abduction skit.) The spin city episode with the memorial for the K9 who died, and the pbs show with arlo guthrie celebrating 50 year anniversary of Alice’s Restaurant (though what I keep going back to is Comin’ into Los Angeles). I’m about to delete the Broadway at the white house show, which featured it’s hard to be the bard and the amazing Christian Borle. (I went to opening night of Peter and the Starcatchers at the La Jolla Playhouse, and was mesmerized by CB as Black Stache. Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson were in attendance, and we got our playbills signed by them. The phrase I’m a friend of Jeff meyerson works wonders, though i talk dogs with ridley.

Maggie, Diane finally stopped watching THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS which she recorded every day for her mother. That will reduce space on the DVR. We have three Christmas movies that Diane still wants to watch.

I shall now be humming “Dancing Queen” all day. Which is not a bad way to spend the first day of 2016. Happy New Year to you and yours, George, and to the rest of the gang who comment over here.

Happy New Year, George, and everybody here!

For a moment I wondered what kind of new health related measure a DVR is – until I read the next comment …

Getting my weight down or at least keeping it is also a challenge for me – my wife’s just too good as a cook!
She knows all the traditional Hungarian dishes (often with lard as an essential ingredient …) and also wants to try all international recipes that she reads or hears of. And when you’re older you just can’t eat as much as you used to do – so we always have to invite friends or family.

Wolf, we have two refrigerators bulging with food. After Helen’s funeral, many of our friends dropped off all kinds of food and desserts. Diane’s sister took some of it when she returned to Ohio. But there’s still enough goodies for a week’s worth of meals. My wife is also an excellent cook. You and I are two lucky guys!

Happy 2016 to you all.Let’s hope it’s a good year for us all, and for the world. My resolution (yes, I still try) is to be less negative, and (as always) lose weight, which includes get more exercise.

We don’t have a DVR, but if we did it would have to be the Comcast one, since Comcast has this area firmly in it’s grip. Since we don’t watch that much TV, On Demand works fine for us.

Rick, Happy New Year to you, too! Most of the TV shows on our DVR are Diane’s: THE GOOD WIFE, SCORPION, JANE THE VIRGIN, etc. I’m caught up on all the programs I watch.

Happy New Year to you and yours, George. I haven’t made a resolution (the last one I saw through was 2003 where I read the Bible over the course of the year), but I always start the year pledging to be a better person, wife, mother, friend, eat right, save more, etc. We’ll check on February 1 how that’s going!

Jeff, I’m so envious of your service. Sadly, we have no choice for cable here. I’m lucky to be in the cox section, and pity people who have no choice and have to take time warner. I wonder if we could mount a class action suit to force the city to allow free choice. FIOS sounds amazing
