DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE MORGANS?

Surprising as this sounds, I actually thought Did You Hear About the Morgans? was mildly entertaining. Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker play an estranged couple who witness a murder. They are whisked off to a Witness Protection Program site in Ray, Wyoming. Their guardians are Sam Elliot and Mary Steenburgen. The rural beauty works its magic. The sparks begin to fly. Yes, this a routine romantic comedy. Nothing special. But Parker plays the hyper New Yorker perfectly. Hugh Grant…plays Hugh Grant perfectly. GRADE: C+

Boy, you’re easy to please, George!

You’d have to pay me – a lot – to see that one. Sarah Jessica needs to find a new act; she’s not 30 anymore.

You’re right about Sarah Jessica Parker not being 30 any more. Hugh Grant looks older, too. But this harmless bit of fluff has a pretty good cast.

She really does need to do something new. She was never as cute as she thought she was anyway. It seems like all of these romantic movies are acted by people ten years or so beyond the scripted age. Mid-forties, my kids were graduating from college and these characters act like parethood is still in their future. Weird.

You’re right about the movie obsession for children, Patti. It’s not enough to find Love, you have to have a cute kid, too. I find it annoying.

I had to go check. She is 45 and he turns 50 this year! Not that we can’t (and should) have romances about older people, but they don’t play them as such.

Young viewers will not go to this movie, Patti. I would say the average age of the folks who were in the theater watching DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE MORGANS? was about 60. Both Sarah Jessica and Hugh acted like they were 20-year-olds. You’re right, it’s weird.

I’m surprised at your (mildly) positive review. This movie hadn’t really made much of a blip on my radar when I saw the most god-awful commerical for it: Hugh Grant was trying to fend off a bear attack and SJP was standing behind a screen door yelling instructions at him. The commercial couldn’t have been more than 30 seconds long, but it felt interminable. I went from complete disinterest to active dislike in less than one minute.

I’m not sure about the new Meryl Streep movie, “It’s Complicated,” but at least the actors seem to be playing age-appropriate parts.

IT’S COMPLICATED is our on See Real Soon list, Deb. DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE MORGANS? breaks no new romantic comedy ground, but manages to be mildly entertaining. Of course, some people may find it exasperatingly dull.
