I’M A WINNER!

Every Summer for the past 20 years the North Tonawanda Public Library has held its annual Summer Reading Program. People were encouraged to read books, fill out the Reading Sheet, and then turn it in for raffle tickets for each completed book. There were a number of Gift Baskets available as prizes with a small tub in front of each one. You placed your raffle tickets in the tubs of the Gift Baskets you wanted to win. I put most of my tickets in the MOVIE Gift Basket (a $50 AMC Gift Card, a box of microwave popcorn, and a book about movies was in that one) and the BUFFALO BILLS FAN Gift Basket which included a gift certificate to a local sub shop, bags of munchies (Doritos and potato chips), and a book titled 100 Facts Every Bills Fan Should Know.

I won the BILL FAN Gift Basket! After playing this game for 20 years, this is the first time I’ve won anything!

George, as a mathematician myself I can only agree – I#ll tell that to anybody who wants my help in this!

        Congratulations anyway!

Wolf, anyone who has taken a probability and statistics class knows how slim the chances of winning are in lotteries and casinos.

You misunderstand the purpose of casinos and lotteries. It’s the action. Winning is secondary. And it’s how some people spend their entertainment dollar. Or, in some cases, their entertainment paycheck and second mortgage.

Bob, the casinos in Western New York are full of retired folks gambling away their Social Security checks. Most afternoons, it looks like Adult Day Care in the casinos.

Same here, plus a healthy dose of Asians. And I’m really amazed the number of handicapped people in there. I wonder if they’re blowing their piddling disability checks or their huge personal injury lawsuit awards.

Congratulations, George, even if it did take you 20 years!

You got something you wanted for doing something you loved. There is no bad here.

Beth, the Summer Program is very popular with the community. There’s a high degree of participation. But I didn’t think it would take me 20 years to win.
