INSIDE OUT

Riley is an 11-year-old girl whose family just moved from Minnesota to San Francisco. She’s dealing with a lot of issues. We see Riley’s emotional life play out through Pixar’s “Headquarters” where Joy (Amy Poehler), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Fear (Bill Hader), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) try to keep Riley on an even keel. But, of course, things go wrong. In fact, plenty goes wrong. Riley’s emotions have to deal with crisis after crisis. I thought Inside Out presented an innovative way to view our emotions. This is NOT a movie for five-year-olds. Concepts like long-term memory and abstract thinking come into play. But for kids 10 and up and adults, Inside Out is one of the best movies of the year. Check out the interview with director Pete Doctor below. GRADE: A

Yes, the kids in the audience when I saw it were very fidgety. Kevin said it was the kind of movie you saw once and liked but didn’t want to see again. Unlike THE AVENGERS, which he can see over and over. But he was able to sum it up for us and so I went (alone). I thought the woman from THE OFFICE did a great job as did Amy Poehler. The women were the stars. Highly original. Even adult movies will find it hard to top this one. It could win as a regular movie (not just an animated one) at the Oscars if the voters were honest.

Patti, you and I share the same reaction to INSIDE OUT. It’s oscar-worthy and not just as an animated feature. It’s clever and funny and touching. INSIDE OUT is one of the best films of 2015.

This may be my favorite film of the year thus far. I saw it with my niece in Minnesota, expecting to be entertained, and instead I was moved. It is a beautifully told tale, with plenty of humor and mayhem to keep kids amused and plenty of emotion for those of us who are children at heart.
